I purchased a Porsche (Momo) Cup wheel in order to get a bit more reach, and today I dropped into Precision Porsche in order that they might fit it.
Whilst they've fitted hundred of these wheels to 993's and even more to 964's mine was the first 996 they've had in for re-wheeling.
We ran into an issue- the steering column on the 996 is not a ground as it is in the older cars - and the horn is designed to use the column as a ground.
So we're a bit stuck - I'm sure we can get round this, but has anyone else plowed this particular furrow before us?

You just need the correct boss, in my case it was off the shelf OMP which retained the clock spring unit and therefore all original wiring. I just terminated the original horn wires into spades and they attached to the horn push accordingly.
20 minute job from start to finish and that includes making a resistor pack for the SRS to avoid the warning light.

The plastic cover over the clock spring is a bit fugly but I plan to have that trimmed in leather.

Yes, I had the same problem when I put an RS wheel in mine. You'll probably find the horn works if the steering lock is on ?
The solution is to add an earth to the column. It was easy enough to do.... I just can't remember exactly how I did it ! I'll have a dig around tomorrow to see if I've got any pics.

Ok, a further two hours spent on this today and we have at least confirmed one thing- the column is extremely well insulated/isolated.
The kit from Carnewal cannot work on (at least this) 996, not if you want a horn that works anyway.
Bit of a shame that it's taken four hours of trying to get to this point- an expensive failure, basically the cost of the wheel spent on technicians hours to discover that the wheel has to go back.
I'm unimpressed that this wheel is advertised as being suitable for a 996, with the included parts, as this is (to my knowledge) untrue.

You can use the OMP boss with that wheel, as far as I know this is an issue with any 996 with PSM that uses the large black plastic clock spring assembly and what you have will work fine on any other 996/986 without PSM as they don't have the same clock spring assembly (no steering angle sensor built in). The kit from Carnewal cannot work on (at least this) 996, not if you want a horn that works anyway.

An email from Gert arrived today, apparently a small hole needs to be drilled in the black metal part of the steering column (pointing finger) and an earth wire then attached to a screw through said hole.

Being transparent I am unclear how this section of the column connects to the inner, rotating part of the column, possibly magical unicorns are involved.
