911 993 Top End Engine Rebuild - Help
Discussion
I recently bought a 995, 911, 993 with just 55k miles which appears genuine. Long & short of it - Does anyone know anybody who can do a top end engine rebuild who is good and competitive?
Deatails - It has been stored for many years off and on and not serviced for a couple of years. I decided to book it in at a local Porsche Sepciaist for a service and to investigate a tapping noise. Tapping noise was traced to one of the camshafts which meant engine out. Engine out resulted in finding lots of oil leaks which I have been advised means a top end engine rebuild circa £3500 including labour & parts.

Absolutely this. I’ve seen his work on mine and other Porsches, raced with him and he and his team have always done great work. It’s not an OPC style set up which is part of the charm but I’m not aware of one disappointed customer. His own car has been a front runner in all sorts of race series for many many years. He’s also fixed poor work or improved upon work done by far larger, far more famous independents that I won’t name and he’s made some of the maddest air cooled engines ever.
I doubt the garage that has done the diagnosis and engine removal would be impressed if you send the engine elsewhere for a top end. The price they have quoted is not at all unreasonable. Head studs, valve guides and through bolt seals would be a smart move, this will up the price by circa 50%. Cams arent cheap if a new one is needed although it could just be a tired hydraulic lifter.

For me the fact that he races his aircooled engines on a very high level ( Mclaren/audi R8 GT3 Class ) sets him apart from the rest of the shops - you are right you wont get tiles and Cappuchino machines like at the OPCs ( although his wives tea is nothing to be scoffed at He’s also fixed poor work or improved upon work done by far larger, far more famous independents that I won’t name and he’s made some of the maddest air cooled engines ever.
) but his work is beyond first rate and he is not looking to make a killing out of you unlike a few other "Specialists" I wont care to mention. (Cough.. Cough)Gassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
