I also like All along the watchtower, but there are so many others too, some of his blues tracks are outstanding. I can still sit down and listen to the longer Voodoo Chile and enjoy every minute of it I guess Electric Ladyland has it all. Also the early albums are outstanding I was fortunate enough to see him twice once at The Guildhall Portsmouth and then at the Isle of Wight Festival his music was very much part of my youth.

I was never a 'full' fan of Hendrix, but his commercial stuff was brilliant. I saw him in Newbury in the late 60s and like you too at the Isle of Wight in 70 (didn't rate his performance but that could be due to loads of things, plus I went really to see Free and others. The Doors I thought were poor too). Within weeks Hendrix was gone. Then Kossoff died a few years later. I always smiled when they said sex drugs and rock and roll, but it was the bands more than anyone who took the most. It was there, yeah, but I didn't know anyone who touched it. We all went for the music! And it was sooo cheap. £3 a ticket (if you paid!). Today, it's rip you off time.

Anyway, back on topic.

I agree, I felt the sets were 'rushed' almost at the Isle of Wight whereas back in the late 60's when he played at the Guildhall a smallish venue that still had tickets for sale at the time (fifteen shillings) it was a much more relaxed set or at least I think I remember it like that.
Of all performances at the early Isle of Wight festivals Jefferson Airplane and the Pretty Things were by far the best.
On the subject of Free we saw them at the North End Snooker Club and helped them after the gig load their gear in their Transit van.
Portsmouth in the late 60's attracted an awful lot of good bands.

I nominate Red House. Favourite version being, the one recorded live @ San Diego '69.

It's a 13 min track, but it's worth it as it pretty much distils Hendrix for me. Great tone, amazing improv & phrasing. Generally his playing here is the cleanest of them all, IMHO.

There's too many to choose from, but I remember the first time I heard the opening bars of Hey Joe, and feeling the hairs stand up on my neck. Still happens today.
