It’s taken 9 years and the latest round of hype is about to start again

1st October and lots of speculation that it’s going to fly. Contrast changes on the latest image show it saying “where we’re going”… being the line doc brown says at the end of back to the future.

Will be interesting at least!

At this point I’ll believe it when I see one actually driving down the road. The numbers have always sounded impressive, but the wait has been something else.

I'm not even sure the numbers sound that impressive anymore. I mean no one is going to call it slow, but it no longer sounds otherworldly.

That’s the thing with Musk - he’s the first to announce things and then push his engineers to deliver, but he’s reliant on Moores Law and whatever the equivalents are in battery tech to catch up to make it actually deliverable. Just because he announces it first doesn’t mean they deliver first or are the only ones.

I know, that’s why I revived the thread

But Tesla themselves have promised it coming “next month”, “later this year” and “coming soon” repeatedly for years. Tesla took deposits of $50K and even allowed people to buy founder edition cars for $250k 9 years ago with the promise of it being imminent and here we are… still waiting for a potential promise of something that may not even be driveable on public roads if it really does have SpaceX rocket thrusters like he’s promised. But please feel free to Keep drinking the coolaid

The Tesla share price has been sliding for most of 2026 and Space X has fallen, despite every effort to manipulate it upwards. He needs to keep the plates spinning, as he has huge loans secured against his holdings. Hype, baby, hype.

Count me among the continued skeptics, even though I'm a multiple Tesla owner...

That said, the other aspect is that EV performance has moved on considerably since the Roadster 2.0 was originally specced.

The Rimac Nevera / Nevera R and the McMurtry Spierling are both capable of beating the Roadster 2.0's original announced specs, albeit at many multiples of the Roadster's announced asking price..

It wouldn't be very Tesla-like for this car NOT to be the fastest of all at the moment of its introduction at least, just like the Plaid was.

We'll see - eventually! (?)

I’ve seen elsewhere the spec is essentially the same as the outgoing Model S Plaid with 1.9s to 60 times and I suspect will be reusing a lot of the Model S hardware. The 1 second performance will be from a “SpaceX package” and will be track focused thrusters, probably a drag strip special

So all in all, unless they’ve burnt billions on R&D this will be a coupe MS Plaid which they could have done at any point in the last 5 years and a bolt on gimmick nobody but a few influencers will buy. There may be a few cybertruck carry overs like steer by wire, again something that’s been in their parts bin for a while.

I wonder how much that $250k would be worth now if you'd just put it in the S&P500.

AI reckons around 900k.

If they use any kind of cold thruster to lift the car then it will be ear splitting and obviously just a stunt. Even if they used them for acceleration they can't get away from the noise.

Would be nice to have a Roadster Lite though.... A rwd roadster but with M3P performance, range and price around 70k
A 719 Boxster EV but without the Porsche badge premium but with the Tesla experience, software and charging infrastructure. I'd be happy with a convertible M3P

This prompted me to look around a bit, and I found some articles about the Denza Z Spider. Prices announced (around 150,000£ in the UK, it seems) and demonstrators have been seen in metal. Apparently, handling is more GT than track - could be a fine-tuning issue.

The open-top version is, of course, slow compared to 10-year-old Roadster 2 promises (2.3 seconds to 100km/h), but 5 minute 10-70% charging time might be a consolation.

Stripped (interior bits mostly gone except for the driver’s seat and controls), tuned Plaids are running mid-8 second quarter mile times, so removing an additional ~500 lbs. and adding ~250HP would put the Roadster 2.0 in that Rimac/McMurtry performance neighborhood…. Wouldn’t require much in the way of dollars to develop either.

That’s what I’m expecting.

And as was mentioned, Tesla still has the 800V architecture and steer-by-wire tech from the Cybertruck that could theoretically be leveraged for Roadster 2.0 as well…

It's going to have to be quicker than the Corvette ZR1X at a similar, if not cheaper, price.

Otherwise what's the point in the US.

I'll assume there won't be a RHS version.

Is that a special edition for Royal Chelsea Flower Show?
