With the news that MG Sports and Racing, the motor sport subsidiary of MG Rover, has followed the main company into administration, doubts have been expressed as to whether MG will be able to participate as planned in the prestigious 2005 DTM series. According to the press office at Longbridge (yes – they do have one) ‘MG and the sport of motor racing are simply made for each other’. Unfortunately MG’s aren’t made for anybody else. While originally MG planned to contest all eleven rounds of the DTM, with cars powered by Zytec V8’s, it now appears that a budget shortfall will mean a rethink. Said a soon to be unemployed spokesman for the Midlands marque, ‘As rather a lot of folk are about to be given the shove, it seems rather inappropriate to employ top-line racing drivers and shell out a fortune on new cars’. To this end MG have announced the signing of Jacques Villeneuve as lead driver while evaluations begin over whether to race with an old MG Maestro or the more likely 2 litre Montego which the spokesman added ‘has the ability to carry four adults and all their luggage over long distances and at a level of comfort and a relative price only available to MG drivers – whoever they may be’.
