Temp agency margins

Hi chaps,

Have any of you hired through temp agencies before? I might need a couple of phone monkeys for a month or so and I'm doing some very rough costings. Happy to pay said monkeys a tenner an hour, just wondering what the agency (Adecco/Reed etc) markup would be, if anyone knows?

I'm probably wrong but I was told a while ago that for the temp person you hire to be paid £10 per hour the agency will charge you close to £20 (using your figure)

I would have thought more like £17-18. The sum is roughly £10ph + pay in lieu of holiday (stupid law) + employers NI + payroll cost + margin.

Personally I wouldn't use a big name like Reed for this level of staff, your local independent will likely be cheaper and probably have a better pool to dip into. At least that's been my experience.

Michael Page, Hays, Reed, Robert Half etc all charge roughly 30%.(Employee's hourly rate + 13% ers NI + Holiday Pay) =33% (roughly)

I have 2 temps in at the moment - first one gets paid £12.50 an hour, we get charged £20+vat, second one gets paid £22/hr, we get charged £32+vat.

Recently paid circa £22 per hour for a very basic (think care home level) cook. They were getting £11.50. I suspect most manual work would be a similar margin.

I do know margins shrink in % as you go up the scale
