We were supposed to be discussing each parties key policies.

Well here it is for crime-which do you prefer-and which is for which party.

Party 1: 40,000 extra police; 10-fold rise in drug rehab places; tougher enforcement of ASBOs; end some early releases; 20,000 more prison places; judges to set min and max sentences.

Party 2: Dedicated policing teams for every area; record police numbers already; plans total of 25,000 community support officers; 1,300 more prison places; double cash for drug treatment.

Party 3 :10,000 extra police; tackle drug dealers rather than cannabis users; more education and training in prison; local communities decide sentences for low level criminals; fewer ASBOs.

Trouble is I know which is which.

1. Sounds good - but has unrealistic aims.
2 is just words.
3 sounds achievable and might make a measurable difference

Probably agree most with 1, but think 3 is the most pragmatic.

ditto

what we need is to tackle the way we view our culture and what is deemed acceptable. It doesn't matter if there are 10,000 more Police if they are enforcing old rules and values and ignoring the rising issues of vandalism, yob'ish behavour and general "whats the point".

More than just crime plays a part here mind, we also need to get rid of this "blame" society that is seemingly growing at a ever increasing rate and ensure that it's not acceptable to live as bottom feeders.

edit:: and make sure that the Police men and women employed aren't there for a cushdy ride and believe in the job they are doing. There are plenty of people who take Civil Service for granted

Its a short guide.

The Tories are committed to scrapping some police paperwork-like the stop and search form.

I agree with Party 1 for the most part-I just wish the Tories could make a break with their authoritarian past and come up with somthing eye catching on drugs.

I have thought for a long time that if the Tories took the somewhat out of character step of decriminalising cannabis (lets face it we are already there) then no other party would get a look in at this election.

Assuming of course people could be arsed to go and vote.

I dont think it would harm them at all, I bet there are more drug sympathetic tories than classic 60+ daily mail reading tories.

You know plotloss I agree-it would say more than anything that the Tories now stand for liberty and fredom from petty government interference.

I think it would gain them the support of alot of 'liberals' .

I don't know the answer. We're just paying the price for lower school standards and discipline, the benefit culture and everything else that has gradually eroded the fabric of society over the last 20 years. Parents pass their principles to their children.

Maybe in the case of vandalism or theft, the miscreant should be forced either to clear it up (at pain of being truncheoned into the ground) or have any earnings/savings/benefits sequestered to replace the item. So a scrote who trashes a £40K car will have to work a bloody long time to buy the victim a replacement.

I doubt that Plotloss, even with police reallocated from Drugs duties AND a cut in paperwork I still don't think we would have enough police.

The amount of crimes per each individual policeman is frightening.

I remember reading that some of the justification for the Lambeth experiment was that a possession bust took two officers off the beat for 5 hours whilst they interview, form filled, prepared and were present for the warning at the end.

Pointless exercise.

5 hours is about half a shift isnt it?

You would neeed fewer coppers were you to decriminalise cannabis. But the numbers would still be too low - we would still need more recruitment.

If the tories were to decriminalise cannabis, with a serious look at all drugs, then yeah, they might be worth voting for. At the moment, they are not the party for small government, just the party of slightly less government. Forget what labour are doing. Be original and bold. That way if you get in, the population might even be able to notice a difference. Hell, they might even vote for you because of it.

At the moment all the parties seem to be campaigning not to lose the election. How inspiring.
