I think it's the 2nd highest price for a watch sold at auction behind the Graves Supercomplication, and a record for a wristwatch. The Graff/Jacob/Chopard are extremely ambitious in terms of pricing...https://www.thetrendspotter.net/expensive-watches/
Pfft, the buyer is stupid. There is nothing this watch does that you can't do with your smart phone. Or if you must wear a watch, what's wrong with an F98W? In fact the F98W is far better, because it can be strapped to 2lbs of semtex and used as a timer.
Trying to buy a new house, must not spend any more money on watches. Not that this would have been in budget, even if I checked the back of the sofa for fake £1 coins.

Why on earth would one pay that for a Daytona??
Because it was 'Paul Newman's Daytona' not 'a Daytona'.Personally, I wouldn't, even if I had 16,000,000 to spare as it's not even a very attractive Daytona, but someone clearly felt differently and had the cash to spare.
If you've an obsession with Paul Newman and 16,000,000 down the back of the sofa, I guess it's as good a way to spend it as any...
M.
The atmosphere in the room was killed with that stupid willy waving opening bid of 10 million, which is a prime example of how crazy the vintage watch market has got in many respects.
Still, was nice to see it in the metal last week, before it disappears into the new owners safe for good, and of course it is great that a chunk goes to charitable causes.
The only other 'missing' watch I could see topping that number, would be Buzz Aldrin's Speedmaster, if ever were to surface.

Or Neil Armstrong's...It was left in the lunar module, so although it landed on the moon, it was never worn on the moon.
Buzz's is historically more important as it was the first watch worn on the surface of the moon. It was then lost (stolen) en route to the Smithsonian, and has never been seen since, hence my comment.

That is owned by the Smithsonian and will never be sold.

OK, I wasn't aware about the loss/theft. I went to the space & flight museum in Washington DC around 20yrs ago and don't specifically recall seeing any watches but didn't realise the 'Holy Grail' was still out there waiting to be discovered. It was left in the lunar module, so although it landed on the moon, it was never worn on the moon.

If ever it's found then historically it 'should' be worth more than one worn by a film star but with modern celebrity obsession, who knows?
