Hi Guys,

Wife and I are due to move to Doha at the end of November.

Posting this up in case anyone knows of something going?

I've started looking for work but am aware I can't apply until I'm there.

About me:

No degree
6+ years sales (Direct, phone and D2D, 2 years Tech support with Apple, 2 years online marketing. - all fairly low level stuff but top of my game and I excelled.

There's lots of stuff I'd love too do but realise I can't be fussy.

I'm 29, well presented, well spoken and a hard worker. We plan to stay in Qatar for the foreseeable future so keen to get started.

We both lived and worked in Kuwait previously and loved it.

Thanks for any pointers or advice

Justin

To be honest with you, outside of the Construction and Teaching Sectors it's pretty dead here right now. The Blockade is really hurting, although no one will publicly acknowledge it.

Qatar Airlines are slashing staff and many UAE affiliated businesses are pulling out.

The loss of Saudi and Emirati tourists has killed the hotel chains.

Without a degree or similar recognised qualification you'll be up against much cheaper eastern Europeans South Africans Filipinos Egyptians and Indians who excel in sales hospitality etc on a fraction of the wages I suspect you might accept.

The new South African receptionist in my apartment block is on 3,000 rivals a month plus accommodation, that's about £600 a month

Best advice is to get here and network as much as possible

You might get lucky but my experience here is that this is the leanest and hardest time for Qatar in the 4 years I've lived in Doha

That said, all the best and feel free to PM me once you've landed if you need any help getting started

ETA - the unregulated Financial Services sales market here with the 'Wealth Management' companies such as DeVeres in West Bay are always looking for smart well spoken Brits for commission based telephone sales. Pretty mind numbing and it seems a high turnover of people but maybe worth considering

I'd say that my experiences back up the poster above...
I'm 40 with 17 years experience in the ICT Management arena, doing some fairly high-level things but with the downturn in Oil and Gas over the last few years I couldn't find anything when my last company closed and ended up having to move back to the UK.

I'm also like you in that I have no degree and, sorry to say, that without a lot of luck and a personal contact that single fact alone will kill you stone dead.
In the last 2 years I've made well over 200 applications, received one phone interview (for a role that turned out to be paying TCN money) and the rest I've either not heard anything or been told that I've been binned in the first cull as I don't have a degree.

The region seems to be far more bothered by a piece of paper earned decades ago than by real experience sadly.
