Done a search, but can't find any recent posts. Thinking of organising a trip for 4 cars to the Isle of Man next year, not for the bikes, but just for a long weekend. Driving from near Aberdeen, and therefore getting the Heysham ferry. Got a few questions, hopefully someone can help!

When would be the best time to go, for it to be quieter - i.e. away from TT week. Fairly flexible on when we go, any time between (say) May and October

Are there still no speed limits on the mountain course, outwith the towns & villages?

Any other feedback appreciated

Ask the IoM tourist board.

If you are going for driving then I'd avoid TT time, and also check for various other bike races and rallies if you want to avoid any road closures and explore all the island. Though saying that, the road closures for rallies only last a small number of hours.

The main road closures are TT and Classic TT/MGP. TT is usually last week May/ 1st week in June. MGP is usually the end of August. There are other race meetings like the Southern 100, (which is held in early July I think), but is held on a shorter circuit and only affects the roads near Castletown. (The Billown circuit).

The car rally is in September, but alot of stages are on minor country roads, night stages etc, so unlikely to have the same impact on travelling around the island as the TT or MGP would.

I'd google for any events that might close roads before you decide on any dates.

There are no speed limits on the Mountain Road and a few others, but speed limits have been creeping in on some other roads that were previously derestricted. Still a nice place for a drive around though. Plenty of nice scenery too.

As above, I'd go either between TT and MGP or after both. Weather gets better towards Aug, getting worse towards late Sept. Technically anywhere with national speed limit signs is no limit but most people drive about 60mph anyway so if you do treat it like your own race track the law will throw the book at you. Enjoy it and be resoectful and you'll have no problem.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I normally try and organise runs like this outwith the school holidays so looks like early September, before the rally, might be the best option
