So my car(alfa mito 1.4 petrol 955) broke down at the end my 120mile drive to coventry from london...so the battery sign came on the display and steering became heavy...at first i thought its the drive cable...but it was intact then i was told its the alternator and i changed it in a garage with a cheap rtx alternator....

Now the problem is randomly when i start the engine i get the same battery sign and heavy steering problem but once i switch off the engine and switch on it fixes the problem and drive after that is fine ...so everytime i get this issue i just have to restart...

So i checked wiring, earth cable....everything seems to be fine..

The garage guy suggests it could be a faulty alternator nd says rtx once r prone to faults... Nd yeah voltage fluctuates like 13.8-14v nothing more...nothing less...

Any suggestions??

First of all, I would get a free battery check. If that is knackered, then it may not be providing the necessary voltage consistently.

Also the MiTo does have an occasional issue with its power steering motor, but I don't think the battery light normally comes on at the same time.

Earthing cables, its a common fault on anything fiat over the past 10 years, the connections in the crimps will be corroded (Probably) try a jump lead from earth to engine block to see if it fixes it.
