Re TPM on a 997 Turbo:

Apparently my batteries have given up the ghost (not surprising after 10 years). Does anyone know of a repair or replacement option before I go ahead and spend £7000 on having a new set supplied and fitted?

Also my specialist tells me that, if when they're removed, they're a type that's unavailable I'll also need a new £300 control unit that matches their frequency (as it'll be different from the originals). Can anyone advise me this?

I understand that the batteries cannot be replaced.

Update: Apparently there are two frequencies so aftermarket items may not be readable by the control unit (I say may not as some control units will read dual frequencies - which means some don't) ;scratchchin:

Also interesting to note that, apparently, up to 997.1 the batteries are live all the time, after this the design changed to them sleeping when not moving.

I had my ECU reprogrammed to have this disabled. A year or two ago I did the full job at what I thought was a ridiculous cost but I justified as a once in several year job (car is a 2008). Then this year they started acting up again and I was told I needed new control units again!!!! So I said bugger that, spoke to a few people who said they are notorious for causing problems and just decided to disable the TPM altogether so its not throwing warning lights at me all the time. I know its a premium manufacturer but the price of these things is just stupid.

ETA; my car also had an issue where the battery seemed to be draining at a ridiculous rate. An indy I know kept it a few days testing the current draw overnight and it also turned out it was the TPM causing it. So this really made up my mind to just disable the bloody thing.

Might be worth asking these guys as they show several different sets of sensors by age of 911 with prices from £45 per sensor.

Will discuss switching TPMS off as maybe a temporary option (if the service guys will do it?) as when it comes to sell (no plans, but whenever that is!) the new owner will want it resurrected.

The valve and monitor are sold separately so they are probably pricing them together.

It is easy enough for a decent Indy to switch it off they just have to unplug the module under the front cover and turn it off on their system.

Assuming that you have blank values on all tyres?

Thanks Kev RS. Yes, I think they’ve included the valves. Will probably get it done even though car’s going into storage. Will have to at some point anyway.

The sensors on most cars can be cloned and a universal sensor programmed with the data so the car thinks it's the same sensor and continues to work as normal.
As far as I'm aware Porsche are no different and can be cloned and new sensor fitted to each wheel in about 1.5 hours to do all 4.
The tyres will need removing the old sensor reading cloning and a new sensor programming and fitting to each wheel.
It's pretty time consuming but can be easily sorted.
It's usually charged £75 per sensor for programming and fitting.
The most popular replacement programmable sensor is call I-sensor made by auto gem.
Obviously with a car like yours it depends on where can do them and if you trust them to not damage the car or wheels removing the wheels and tyres

£110 all in, solar powed receiver, does temperature as well as pressure.

Granted, it's not a hidden system like the OEM stuff, but does the job at a fraction of the cost.

Mine stays tucked in the door pocket (stays charged for ages) unless on track. Beeps if there's an issue like sudden loss of pressure etc...

nope, but I ought a set of Amazon for circa £23 - internal sensors and a solar power receiver.

gives more info that the OEM stuff (includes tyre temp) and is less than the price of a single oem sensor!

Bought 997 turbo in 2006. Switched off TPMS in 2007. Still have car. Never missed having TPM tbh
