Presumably these work if you are happy to run with the contract, and people have failed to realise if you wish to effect a break clause you end up having to compensate the other party. Which seems a little one-sided, but these are commercial deals, with commercial consequences, which means terms which may not be written in to the contract expressly take effect.

If English law applied you could imagine the accusation of unfairness/ compo demands etc, when people have entered into these contracts without due diligence, and think they can take one out and in ~20 years time have all their money back and somewhere to live and/ or holiday FOC...
