My 2009 V8 Vantage door mirrors make noises like there are plastic gears behind the glass that are stripped or skipping. The mirrors work, but they are very jerky. Does anyone know how to take apart and repair the door mirrors? I have a shop manual, but the answer there is to replace the entire mirror. If I can get the glass out without breaking something I might be able to figure it out. Thanks.

A faulty door module has the same effect. Acting erratic and jumping is symptomatic.

Thanks for the suggestion. Does the module cause the internal mechanics of the mirror to slip? I just had the modules in both doors replaced ($$$) to correct a number of problems, but it didn't fix this. The AM dealer serviceman said it's in the mirror. It sounds like plastic gears slipping, like when you push on an electric mirror with your finger and move the mirror manually and you hear repeated clicks. It makes that same sound when the mirror is adjusted by the controls.

The motors moving the mirror are somewhat of a "black box" - once you've taken the mirror off, they're easy to remove/replace. You can use Volvo parts (left 30634227, right 30634229), so it's not too expensive and definitely a DIY job,

That's great news! Thank you. When you say "once you've taken the mirror off," do you mean once I've removed the glass from the whole mirror unit, or once I've taken the whole mirror unit off the door? I have the shop manual which shows how to take the mirror unit off of the door, but it doesn't give any detail on how to take the glass mirror out of the unit or how to take the mirror unit apart. Are there instructions somewhere, or is it obvious, or is the glass held in by adhesive tape and will pull off?

I found out that the mirror cap comes off by carefully prying loose some tabs along the bottom and sides. I'll give that a try. Thanks.

Just the mirror - incidentally, I used a plastic shoehorn to "pry" it off. The heater connectors were rusted solid, so I couldn't remove it all the way - but I managed anyway. Sorry, didn't take any photos.

Hi - I've recently had the issue of the passenger door mirror motor (2009 V8V) clicking when you unlock the car and then once in the car having to reset it to it's desired position - not a major problem but quite irritating. I done a bit of research and found that it's a fairly common issue (as detailed by the OP) and normally sorted out by replacing the Volvo mirror motor (as per photo attached). I sourced a second-hand motor (they are not the easiest things to find) and fitted it and all seemed well until a couple of days later it started clicking again. Obviously it could be that the replacement motor is faulty but I just wanted to check if anybody has had a similar experience and whether I am missing some reset process that sorts it out or if there is some other part that can cause this to happen. Any advice greatly appreciated as always 👍
