BTCC - Silverstone - Rounds 25, 26, 27
Discussion
Close championship this year, but good luck to Ash Sutton, although it's too close to call at this stage.
The "boost" argument rages on, will the Subarus continue to enjoy their extra, I wonder?
The Swindon-engined cars actually had their boost reduced at Rockingham, and needless to say, there are a lot of unhappy Team Principals muttering under their breath.
With the TCR series looming, I'd have though that they would be the people TOCA would be trying to keep happy?

Can someone do the maths and see if the championship can be secured this weekend?
I think it can but I don't know for sure.
I think Ash needs to win all three races to do it but I can't do the maths
I think it'd require Sutton to win all 3 of the rest of the top 5 to score naff all. I think it can but I don't know for sure.

You see, I added it up like this -
20 points per race, plus fastest lap at 1 point and leading a lap at 1 point, 22 points each race.
Plus the 1 point for pole in race 1, that adds up to a maximum of 67 points.
IF Sutton wins all 3 races, gets pole, fastest lap and leads each race he'll be on 379 points.
If Turkington finishes in 2nd for each of those races, he's on 351 (17 per race)
That would mean that even if Turkington got 67 points from the last 3 races, putting him on 418, Sutton would only need to finish 3rd in each race.
If Colin gets DNFs, it's pretty much game over... I think?
But obviously it's almost impossible to win all three races.

The impending TCR series impact is interesting. They also have balance of performance but generally it's applied by model rather than specific car or team. It's also openly published and boost/restrictors are 3rd in line after weight and ride height.
The biggest problem with BTCC's balance of performance is nobody really knows what's going on with it apart from snippets that make it out, supposedly boost levels being changed during race weekends even between races.
Even if they get the penalty confirmed at the national court, I can't help but think a back of grid penalty at Brand GP is less painful than Silverstone, Brands GP is a lot longer a lap and more overtaking opportunities.
Edit: just seen it's unlikely the national court will convene before the end of the season so all points could be stripped and the actual championship result will therefore remain provisional until the hearing. This pisses me off. Stripping points doesn't address the issue that the car would not be where it was and the races would have played out differently with different cars in different places. Really ought to be heard before the final round of the season.

The situation surrounding Josh Cooke and his one race ban is a joke.
I've not actually seen the incident they're appealing against but his team is doing a text book job of using the processes in place to try and better the chances of their driver.Even if they get the penalty confirmed at the national court, I can't help but think a back of grid penalty at Brand GP is less painful than Silverstone, Brands GP is a lot longer a lap and more overtaking opportunities.

The camera didn't catch the whole incident, but Cook hit the back of Jelly's car hard enough to rip a rear wheel off at turn 2. Given some of the bad driving through out the field it's surprising it was the first ban of the season!
Hell of a close qualifying at Silverstone, with the whole grid separated by a second, and Goff taking pole by 0.001 seconds!

BTCC becomes a (very poor quality) soap opera:
Jason Plato (today on Silverstone circuit radio):
“We’ve had our engines turned down yet again, so we’re going to struggle on the straights,” said Plato to the circuit radio after practice.
“We’re losing four car lengths on the back straight. There’s no point in grumbling about it, I just don’t understand what the rules are anymore, but we’re having fun.”
He doesn't understand the rules? Oh, yes he does! He certainly understands the politics. I see he's offering no comment on the extra boost his Subarus have been enjoying on recent rounds?
At last TOCA has listened to the other teams. It's finally dawned on TOCA that the TCR series is looming.

The majority of teams/fans alike are sick of the boost situation and Plato's b
hing if it isn't in BMR's favour. Let's face it he spent 2/3's of this year refusing to speak to the media while things weren't going well.
TOCA need to set a boost level next year and leave it down the engine builders to get their engines producing the best power they can within the regs.

But it's (meant) to be a "performance balanced" series. Thus the engine builders cannot produce "more powerful" engines than the rest of the grid. Torque is a different thing though, which is why the Hondas perform so well even with full ballast. The joke is, despite Tayto's protestations, all the Swindon-engined cars had their boost reduced at Rockingham. Now TOCA, explain that one.
