I've always rolled them on their back and pinned them there (position of submission), as their parent dogs would, it shows them who the Alpha dog is.
Good luck with your new puppy!
..and whilst there you growl a bit and show teeth. This is dog behaviour and ensures it knows the hierachy within the pack. I agree the yelping also helps to make Muttly aware it hurts.
My puppy used to do this to me too!!! She is a very dominant female or thought she was, i found that pinning her down worked so it let her know that i was stronger and above her - apparently you should never let a dog go above your head as they think they are no 1!!! This could be an old wives tale though.

Get it some toys and praise it when it doesn't bite!!
For fecks sake ignore this lot and get some specialist advice.
For instance, do a Google on Sarah Whitehead, some good books -we trained our Pointer X at one of her classes in Windsor four years ago and have carried that on ourselves with our Weimaraner pup (now 14 months) with 98% success.
Also Google for 'clicker training' -positive reinforcement will have them, literally, eating out of your hands. You gotta be so patient....and think if there was anything you could have done to avoid the problem in the first place.

Please don't hit the dog on the nose, this and his ears are the most sensative parts of the body.
Agreed, smacking a dog on the nose is similar to someone giving you a tap on the bollox. Not nice. Instead of training with punishment you will get a much happier/better behaved dog if you reward its good behaviour. Loudly saying "ouch" or making a yelping noise, then ignoring the dog will help him learn to be less exuberant.

Some people pay for this service. Mot me though you understand!
(Plus, if you had a tap on the bs, what would be dispensed?)
I'm guessing the dog is a blob

Thanks everyone!
I tried the yelping noises, and that seemed to work - he let go pretty quickly and licked my hand instead! He's obviously the caring sensetive type.
Now all I have to do is house train him.
How old should he be before I try and teach him to walk at heel?
We've only had him for three days, but he has already given us so much pleasure. Everybody says that having a dog changes your life - I see what they mean!
Cheers all,
Richard
