Just had a look, and seen her planned route. I am now scared for her, as she plans on taking the A442 through Telford, which is a concrete dual carriage way at NSL, and is a link road between Telford suburbs and the M54. Its not safe for cyclists, even with a escort car.

I struggle to understand how a road is not safe for cyclists when you have a car behind you?

Simple, they'll pass the escort car, and pull straight back in, they won't be looking for the cyclist in front of it. Then there are the slip roads onto and off it, and then the sudden restrictions down to 1 lane.

If I tell you the average speed on this road is close to that of a full motorway, would you cycle down it?

I think you probably aren't aware of the sorts of roads time trial cyclists ride down. I've had a look at it and it looks pretty standard.

Ladies' LEJOG record is the first target and, if she is on track, then she is also going for the 1,000 mile record

When you say "only an hour ahead and she's near Bristol" she is actually 1h 50' ahead with 190 miles ridden

I don't actually agree with that. The interest isn't there.

But yes, my person thoughts are that Jasmijn would have won so much more if she prepared properly and learned from previous errors. I like her and she's a strong rider, but the amount of things that seem to always happen to her are staggering.

I don't buy the lack of interest as the reason why such records endure

Take men's time trial records for instance.

There was no lack of interest when the

- 10 record stood at 18.27 for around 8 years to 2001

- 25 record stood at 45.57 for 16 years to 2009

- 50 record stood at 1.39.51 for 10 years to 1993 and at 1.43.46 for 13 years before that to 1983

- 100 record stood at 3.22.45 for 12 years to 2015

Did Obree set that in that silly position?

Chris Boardman, arguably one of, if not the greatest tester of all time.

The others require perfect days which are so hard to get, and there are far fewer events at that distance.

My personal thought is that any of the top women now if they got it right and trained a bit would break most of these old records. Alice Lethbridge could break this record, for example.

As with all of these things, I do think preparation is so vital.

I also believe there's a lack of interest. We have a pretty good cyclist at work and I don't think she would want to sacrifice the amount of time needed to do this.
