I have a problem with my 2011 E90 318i. There is a red engine symbol and an amber triangle with an exclamations mark on the display. In using the stalk (BC) the fault codes are CC-ID 30 and CC-ID 431. According to the forum, this refers to Stop Engine and Brake overloading respectively. This has occurred 3 times in a week. The first time it happened while I was driving, I pulled over and stopped the engine. After inspection and found nothing bad in the engine compartment, I plugged in a basic OBDII scanning device and found no fault. After about 40mins, the error message cleared itself on re-start. I drove about 300 miles in 4 days afterwards with no errors which lead me to believe it was just a glitch in the system. But no such luck!

On the 2nd occasion when it occurred, I was on the motorway at night so decided to continue as I was near my destination about 5 miles away. During this time, I had not noticed any difference in engine performance - everything seem normal.

The error cleared itself after a couple of restarts the next day. In searching on the Internet found nothing other than it could be related to a faulty sensor - perhaps a nitrogen oxide sensor.

On a long journey home at night, the error message re-appeared but decided to continue on.
The journey was 190 miles and the car ran normal throughout with no difference in fuel consumption.

Has anyone encountered this before or might know what the problem is ?

Update: took the car to a BMW indy garage near me earlier in the week. The diagnosis was that there was a vacuum leak around the servo unit. Something had came loose and was "fixed". I don't recall the exact details. It may have been the pressure sensor or vacuum pipe.

It took an hour to diagnose at a cost of £126. The fault is now cleared from the display.

I was told that the issue could also be the pressure sensor itself as it is a common fault and suggested to replace it should the fault re-occurs. Thus far, after 100+ miles it has been fine and hoping it stays that way.

This might help anyone who has a similar issue with their car.

Thank you for posting the resolution to your issue - it really helps when threads are closed off in that way.

My son's 2010 320 Touring has also started showing the twin error/warning messages of Engine fault and Brake loading too high. Reading the threads on the various forums, it would seem that the common culprit is the Brake Vacuum sensor. Before he buys a replacement, would anyone know how to test the sensor? Should it have a specific resistance or similar?

I've had the same red engine light for 5 years. Guy on you tube said it was a dirty cambealt sensor. Aa with previous posts, I've had no loss of power or increased fuel consumption.
BMW put a new cam belt at 62,000 as part of warranty to fix another issue. With most cars if the cambelts got to come off to fix another issue, replace it.
