Creaking suspension - any ideas ?

At low speeds (windows up or down), I can hear my suspension creaking slightly. This only started a couple of weeks ago.
I've got a '99 996 C4 with 54k miles on the clock. I can't tell whether the sound originates from the front or the back of the car.
Also, there's a slight rattling coming from the engine, again only noticeable at low speeds. No other side-effects though, i.e. no discernible loss in performance / oil consumption etc.
All advice appreciated before I take it into the dealer for a diagnosis.
