Anyone here in this field or trying to get in?

This is my next career goal to get into, I do some devops at my current place of work (mostly self-initiated), so not full on, mandated automation at any expense.

I'm learning TFS/VSTS, Team City/Jenkins, various deployment tools, I'm strong on Windows Server (more aligned to WinOps), Powershell and Azure but taking some exams and upskilling aggressively.

Any thoughts on getting prepared for a devops career? I have done C# dev and I've done enough ops so this seems like a good next step for me.

Thanks

Ynox

Kind of fallen into this.

My background is predominantly as a Java dev. But these days I seem to do a lot of deployment stuff (think Docker, CloudFoundry) and Linux hacking too (all on AWS). I've used Puppet in the past for scripting deployments too although we're now thinking of moving across to Ansible to line up with other teams.

Can't really comment much on the Windows side of things really though!

I'm also a C# dev and my current role has pushed me much further into learning about devops.

Aside from what you've mentioned, learn about how to use diagnostic tooling, particularly logging. The ELK stack for example is a popular model, often extended with Grafana / Graphite. In addition to that you've got automated alerting such as Seyren that is worth looking into.

Been moving into this area more and more over the last year and a half and regularly use docker, jenkins, spinnaker, puppet etc and I'm looking into others like Kubernetes and AWS as a priority now.
