Fancy drag racing your motor?

Supercar day all in the name of charidee

Cars at Terminal Velocity 2004
Cars at Terminal Velocity 2004
Terminal Velocity (TV) is holding a Supercar Charity Drag Day again this year.

The charity track-day consists of 1/4 mile drag racing and 1.5 mile speed runs and is restricted to 75 Supercars only. It's being held solely to raise money for charity.

TV reckoned the success of last year's event, which raised £600 for Great Ormond Street Hospital, was largely due to the eclectic nature of the attendees, drawn from a select band of Supercar Owner's clubs and a network of Underground Roadracers all looking for a legal outlet for their adrenalin fuelled ambitions.

The audience of petrol heads and party animals came for the weather, the cars and the sights and smells of tortured metal and rubber. Most of the attendees had gathered the night before for some idle boasting and wild speculation about their performances and this continued long into the night. The next day this was evidenced by some late arrivals and very bleary eyes.

Everyone who attended the event managed more drag runs and top speed runs than they could possibly have hoped for, and by early afternoon the leaders were marking their professionalism and commitment clear, by working harder and harder to scrape extra hundredths of a second and tenths of a mile per hour.

The competition was enthralling and much, much tougher than anyone (including the organisers) had expected. A track record for a car's top speed was achieved by the RUF tuned Porsche, with prizes were duly awarded to the winners.

This year the bar has been raised again, with several very heavily tuned 3000GT/GTOs, Supras and RX7s aiming to push the German machines harder and harder, and with the attendance of one of Maranello's finest performers in the shape of an F40. And several of the big BHP Skylines will no doubt have a definitive say in proceedings.

When: 20th August 2005

Where: RAF Woodbridge, Suffolk.

Price: up to £75

Details here.

Am I reading his wrong or did the combined might of 75 supercar drivers manage to raise only 600 pounds. That's less than a tenner each. Shame on them.

Hi Guys,

The Shoguns were support cars for running round the airfield.. (its big so you needed em!)

600 Quid for the first year of the event was pretty good(i was very happy to break even as right up until the last minute we were deep in the red!!) Hope to do much much better this year!! (With all of your help!)

We had a show and shine section last year so we had all sorts of cars turn up to show off !! This year it's just about thrashing the cars to their limit! And with no police to worry about!!!

Just a quick note, but the event is at Woodbridge not Bentwaters , though the basis are twinned Woodbridge is still an MOD facility and so is strictly controlled and can't involve any handling circuits! Unlike Bentwaters which is now privately owned!

Hope to see you all their

Cheers
David McCarthy

Roll up, roll up!! High speed fun and frolics are to be found here!

I went to last year's event and it was a great day out, so let's have people in their droves for TV'05....especially ones who own a Speed 12!!

As for the 600 quid....well, it was 600 quid that wasn't there before TV'04, so I don't really see that as being much of a failure. I've known whole offices of people donate just over 1/20th of that figure for a good cause!
So please, please, PLEASE remember a lot of hard work was put into organising the event by people who don't do it for a living, as is the case again this year.

It would be fantastic to see an even bigger turnout this year, and if not for the event, do it for the charideee mate!

Good call.

I know Woodbridge well and it's great for these days. It is also surrounded by some fantastic drivers' roads.

Over the past few weeks a few people have asked me what the surface of the runway at Woodbridge is like. This question threw me a bit as last year we were so busy I just didn't get a chance to drive down the strip, which was a bit of a disappointment(especially as Spike had offered me a go in RoadShark!- Thanks Spike .)

Anyway as part of my training as an IOPD Marshall and Clerk of the Course. I spent this morning at Woodbridge and during a break in proceedings of the bike sprint day, I took the Beemer down the Runway at a pretty sedate pace and was amazed at how smoothe the surface is ! After a quick circuit back to the start down a not so smooth service road(50mph limit here so no probs) I tried a tad more rapid journey and found it to be equally comfortable!(If only the A12 was half as good !!)

I think it's safe to say that it's the best surface I have ever seen on a drag day. (Much much better than Elvington, and significantly better than Santa Pod and Bruntingthorpe!)

It has wintered extremely well.. the main runway is dark smooth tarmac and runs for over 1.5 miles.. the start area is light tan brown tarmac with lots and lots of grip..Perfect for big power cars to catch a flyer from!

By the time our event comes round 20th August 2005, the new health and safety rules will be functioning very smoothly.

Many Thanks
David McCarthy

Depends if you like seeing the best cars that money can buy being thrashed to within an inch of their life or not...!!! if you're a librarian maybe not??

15 quid for a family entrance ticket, makes it very affordable as well. (and there'll food and drink available and stalls to browse.. and some great cars sitting in the paddock too!!! lolol )

Cheers

1. Viper
2. Enzo (if it shows)
3.

I have discounted the Phoenix Cerbera as whilst I hope it will show it hasn't been built yet AFAIK. In my experience these projects take a lot longer than expected to finish and get working well.

All valid points, but the main engineering work completes pretty soon, after that we've got a few months to tweak and further tweak... see you there...

Positive mental attitude - thats what it takes... as long as things dont go belly-up in a major way, we should be ok well before August....

With the gearing in mind and the low drag-coeff, the 1000rwhp/tonne should produce some interesting results...
