Just got back from a bash up in the hills in the TR7 (it's friday night here in NZ) just going to put her through a few corners and generally make myself feel good after a crap week at varsity. Going up into the hills there's this Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Turbo (1800 DOHC Turbo 4WD, basically a baby Evo 3)up ahead of me. He boots it and I take off after him in the 7... He's easily got me on the straights but every corner I'm back on his ar$3 and pushing him..... hes trying harder and harder to keep ahead, using both lanes while I'm still staying in the one lane trying to keep it tidy. Best i could manage was staying stuck to his bumper (105 bhp or thereabouts is not going to be enough to reel in his 220+) so I concentrate on planting myself behind him. He's really trying hard now, sparks coming off his 4" exhaust as he's dropping wheels off the shoulder to keep ahead (meanwhile I'm braking early to avoid rear ending him). Get to the top of the pass and we both pull into the same carpark and I flip him an appreciative grin, he gets out and comes over and the post-race conversation begins:
"you got a pretty quick car there, what does it run down the 1/4?"
"Never drag raced it." I reply.
"What's it got under the bonnet then?"
"Just a 2-Litre"
"Turbo?"
"Hahahah no"
"Must be making at least 200 horsepower to keep up with me"
"Halve that and you'd be in the ballpark mate, horsepower isn't everything"

He refused to believe that the engine was only the standard lump, even made me pop the bonnet and was looking around for a turbo or something, he just couldn't believe it!

Chatted to him for ten minutes and looked over his car (which had had a reasonable amount of work done on it, gotta wonder where 18 year olds get the money) before driving off.... I think that's probably the most respect I'll ever get out of a boyracer (yes he even had his cap on backwards)
Now I'm back home, quite content and just loving having a British sportscar, thank god I don't drive Japanese.

I wouldn't say I'm a good driver, more know the car reasonably well.... he was trying mind you, was really pushing on, but was just suffering crap 4WD understeer. I've done a lot of work on the TR to make her handle properly, never had a yardstick to put her against, she's always felt sharp, now i KNOW...... oh and she passed her MOT today with flying colours (For a TR7 or ANY british car for that matter, that's an accomplshment! )

You guys dont have MOT's, more like "Eh mate, your car got four wheels?" "No, five, one in the boot"
"You have passed then!"

The MOT in the UK is a LOT stricter than in NZ!

Well driven anyway (why dont you get a TR8?)

hehe pigme, that's true, although in the last 2 years if you drive a car more than 5 years old they do their absolute best to get it off the road, things have gotten a LOT more strict lately

I would love a V8 and when i bought the 7 a few years back that was the plan to do, but I'm only 22 (was only 19 when i got it) so didn't wanna put my insurance thru the roof. Besides, since I've rebuilt and blueprinted the 4, she's about as quick as a standard TR8/TR7V8 up to about 80mph anyway, and it's a lot less lazy. What I'm REALLY after is a dolomite sprint engine for the '7' and turn her into a bit more of a weapon. I think I'd also like to get a TR7 FHC to put a real mean V8 into as a track-only car...... one of those Cerbera 4.5 engines sound tasty I think

Only a couple months to go till I finish my degree and can start earning money to give my "7" the love she deerves

Nice piccie you have there. They look so much better when the wheels are changed to something decent.

I too once owned a seven. Black DHC, standard 2.0 engine, forever balancing the carbs. Totally destroyed a renault five turbo back in the days when they were the boy racers dream and there were no gatso's to catch you doing it heh heh. Unfortunately, a cop car behind us did see us and I got banned for a month with a £120 fine.

Still, I'm older and wiser now - but still car crazy. Enjoy your car.

Byff, Hehe yeah the carbs can be a bitch and a half to work with!.
I had alway thought the were cool little cars and at the price they were a couple years back it was about the best car I could get for the money. Since I've had it though, I've really grown to love them as (especially once you get the engine properly sorted) they are a cracknig little car.... pin-sharp handling and a reasonably gutsy litle engine.

I certainly wil enjoy it mate, don't you worry
