Calais - Antibes The Return leg
Discussion
Whilst laying in the sun enjoying Juan les Pins my thoughts are drifting towards the return journey home.
This year we ended up coinciding with the great French getaway. I thought I might be smart by enjoying a slow drive down, overnight at Dijon and then Avignon.
After 8 hours on the A7 between Dijon and Avignon I decided that rather than be smart I was stupid. I've been in that traffic before and trying to dodge round always ends in tears. Only those who have driven the French motorways at that time will be familiar with that experience. 20mph for 4 hours etc
Anyway, I have a return overnight stop booked near Chalon sur Soane for a week on Saturday. To get there means leaving Antibes in the heat of the day along with a million others heading up north.
As an alternative my idea is stay all day Saturday, get an early night, up at 2:00am and head for home. I reckon doing that I can be north of Lyon by 7:00 or 8:00 and that's the major bottlenecks out of the way.
From there it's a cruise up the east side avoiding Paris to Calais. We have a flexible ferry so can get on the next one when we arrive.
I prefer the short sleep and up at 2:00 option to the drive through the night choice. Starting fresher is always best in my view.
Anyway, bon idea, ou non?
