Strangest piece of music you've ever heard?

My nomination is Runzelstirn and Gurgelstock's "Asshole/Snail Dilema" (although I'm really just referring to the first piece of music from this MP3). Disturbing and beautiful in equal measure and the CD came in a wonderful, yet equally disturbing, CD case replete with faux (at least I hope it was "faux") pubic hair glued to the inside.

aphex rocks - especially the early stuff (get the black and white best of with helios etc on it - great stuf)...
however, although Aphex is a 'bit leftfield' (with a little l - nothing anywhere near ass odd as the toal complexities available from those I mentioned in my previous post - real avant garde is still most certainly 20th century classical
All the techno is grand, but it's still working in established time signatures and with long established harmonic series...
Try a bit of gamelan or some indian ragas for a real eadspin...

try stockhaousen, cage, schoenberg etc al, now thats proper strange music!
I have a recording of 3'33" y cage somewhere which is particularly amusing![]()
Cage was the guy who shoved paper clips in a piano to make a different sound. I think he's awesome
Also love serialism - very complicated mathematically, but not much in the way of aural pleasure! Especially clever when used with counterpoint. Don't have any examples though
As for more 'popular' stuff, the strangest stuff I've come across is the Penguin Cafe - some of their stuff is completely off the wall, and I don't really like it to be honest!
Not so much strange, but truly awful. I bought a tape of some Hungarian blues once. I could not bear to listen to more than the first two lines of the first track. It was enough to make you slash your wrists. Talk about depressing. Mind you, the Hungarians do have one of the highest incidences of suicide in Europe, not far behind the Finns. Must be something to do with a commonality of language and love of alcohol. (Jonna, you are, of course, an exception
).

Milkman for example...
Genius!
A lot of the fringe dance acts are right out there. Early Howie B stuff, Mouse on Mars, Moog Soundsystem, DJ Blim & MC Teabag (no I'm not making this up!) and even the classically misnamed folk outfit Mindless Drug Hoover.

awesome - also done recently in popular context by Tori Amos

Think Steve Reich did a bit of this - got a piece of his for 15 musicians which is pretty serial I think. not heard it for a while as it puts me into a
trance.... Ommmmm titiany said:

can be a bit odd, Phillip Glass can be pretty good too for some crazy orchestral stuff - usually works rather well as music over those films of speeded up motorway traffic shot from a static point...
Other quite strange stuff -
Mouse on mars,
Sun Ra.
Alec Empire (check out his 'Ice maiden' mix of Bjorks single form a few years back, can't remember the title - got the lyric like a killer whale in it...) Has the biggest baddest wall of killer noise I've heard in a long time...
Not to mention some of the stuff that I wrote and released. had a very understanding record company, but even they wouldn't take most of what I was producing at the time
Oh and check out some of the original music for the film assault on precinct 13 - thats a masterpiece of analogue bubblyness...

Penguin Cafe Orchestra
Odd?
Some of the most beautiful contemporary music.
well then perhaps I should give them another chance...
I did form my opinion on them when I was... ooh - about 14.
Perhaps I was just too cool to appreciate that sort of music then - particularly because my Dad bought it!
I will aim to have another listen, ten years on, and get back to you

True quality.
In fact the entire label is pretty bloody good.
Ahhh boards of canada. another reason I shall always e thankful for john peel
as for my own exploits you'd be lucky to find them in a bargain bin anywhere! record company went bust and all their stock was taken by receivers - never did get copies of my last few tracks.. Gave up at that point and sold my soul in corporate IT. best [financial] decision I ever made!!
