.. on a tricky question..

I've always quite fancied a Chimaera (well I'd prefer a Cerbie but I'm not made of money yet ), and the wife likes them too therefore:

"Do I sell the Puma and the S2 and buy a Chimaera..?"

(funds do't allow me to keep either of the above, but both of them together £wise should equate to a chimaera)

Go on guys what do you really think..??

PS. Insurance costs are the same.
PPS. What about runing costs?

You only live once. Sounds like you'd like to, so just go for it.

I don't believe that you'll regret it.

Buy a shed to commute in for days when the TVR is being fixed. Budget £1,500 for servicing/repairs and you should be OK.

No reason not to do this.

According to your profile you've suffered 3K depreciation on your Puma in a couple of years (and probably some on the S2 as well).

I suspect a tidy '98 5 litre Chimaera for 22K won't show much more depreciation over two or three years.

It will cost more to maintain though.

However, the grin is priceless.

Running costs:

MPG for a 4.0HC - 25-27MPG (Better than an old BMW 325i!!!!)
Insurance - £440 on limited mileage
Servicing - £300 - £400 (but had a problem and landed with a £1600 bill!)
Tyres - £200

All up - not that bad. Depreciation wont be that bad (ducks quickly), but get around the £12,000 - £16,000 mark and you wont loose too much. They are still keeping just above the £10,000 mark for the worst ones so expect them to stay around this for a little while anyway.

What I would do is get a runaround for a grand though. Something thats a little more quiet, economical and runs when the TVR doesnt (i.e. doesnt need to be 100% reliable). For the additional cost it is worth the piece of mind knowing that you wouldnt be left stranded if the TVR is getting fixed / services / new boots etc....

But actually costs can be nicely contained if you are careful and do some of the work yourself.

Cheers,

Paul

Woa Jeremy... wrong price bracket there... Puma lost money yes.. and the S2 has stayed the same I reckon.. (I'd be looking for 6k for it)

However I'm looking for a 12-14K Chimaera.. hence cant afford a 500... I'm looking for a tidy 95 ish not 98

Well Matt, Having run a Chimeara and a wedge as my only car in the past (I did 500 miles per week in the Chim and 650 per week in the wedge!) I can say its perfectly feasible to do this.
Running costs in terms of tyres and services will probably run about £1500 pa.
My Chim 4.3 would return an easy 28mpg on a run. 20 is more like it on a stop start commute.
I had no reliability issues (lots of niggles though, more with the wedge at first) and neither car ever let me down.
Drove my Chim in rain, snow (yes really, 4 inches on the ground! ) floods and sun and it was superb.
I definately subscribe to the "Usage makes em reliable" school of TVR owners.
As for the model, well its a matter of choice. 4.0 litre cars are nice, and the HC version goes well. BUT I just LOVED my 4.3. It simply sang it's heart out on track days and was definately quicker than ANY 4.0litre chim (HC or LC) I ever drove. True, the 5.0 is faster again, but to my ear it revved like a cement mixer and was alot more thirsty. (IMHO, no offence intended to you 5.0l boyz)
If it were me I'd go for a nice 4.3 (check out the classifieds, I think Richard Peachey has a nice green one for sale in Somerset)
Failing all that, go a bit cheaper and buy a wedge!

Cheers

Do you want a hard-on everytime you start the car ?

If so get the Chimaera

Live for the now (if you read the 'Iraq' thread we are all doomed anyway.....).

hmm. thats not huge is it... is that careful or "normal" driving..?

Insurance - £440 on limited mileage
Servicing - £300 - £400 (but had a problem and landed with a £1600 bill!)
Tyres - £200

thats what I was thinking.. probably slower depreciation then the Puma..

Cheers for all that.. the landrover will do for the "other car" and theres always my wifes car around too.. as for servicing I can do most things, but have an independant 4 miles from my house who charges £25 ph, so can cater for most eventualities.

Cheers
Matt.

I was sorely tempted to offer you my wedge Matt, but I think I've decided to keep it (unless the offer is too good to ignore.....)
I don't know too much about Richards 4.3 Chim. I nearly did a deal with him earlier this year on it (he was looking to PX with a wedge) and spoke to him at length.
His car sounds like a good one and he seemed a good guy. The 4.3s are very rare and well worth a look.
I took mine all over Europe. On a slight downhill section of autobahn in Germany I managed to get it off the clock! Working off the rev counter, and assuming I got my MPH/thousand RPM calcs correct I think I got up to something like 165mph!
Somersets a nice place to visit......
