991 Targas - Niche / Lovely / Too Heavy?
Discussion
I've got a 911 itch to scratch and i'm thinking about a Targa.
- I drove a '15 Targa 4S at the weekend and hoped for a mega engine note etc with the normally aspirated engine. But its nothing like my Gt4 (same engine)... I wonder why.
Anyways, the second hand ones seem slow to sell yet still expensive... Just a little too niche?
Thoughts chaps?
with thanks in advance

I think they're great looking cars and I think a lot of other people do too judging by comments on here. They're expensive used because they're rare cars....I reckom most OPC's would be lucky to have an allocation of ten Targas to sell in a year across all variants. I suspect they seem slow to sell because people think they're expensive but then when they realise that so few of them ever come on the market they find out why! As an example there are only 100 991 GTS Targa's in the country according to How Many Left.
I had a NA 991.1 Targa LHD over in Spain for a while last year. Thought it was a great car, but as you point out the weight of the roof tech just took the edge of the performance. Also Imv the ride height could have done with being a bit lower.
Early this year I took delivery of a 991.2 GTS Targa below. The cars are poles apart, not just in terms of performance but also in handling also. The lower ride height and revised damping, steering, make the gen 2 great car to drive in the twisty bits. As for performance, I have had 4 x Turbo S in UK, including Gen 2 since they came out in Aug 13. So the 3.0tt had a lot to live up to in this area. Not at any time has the GTS been found wanting. The extra 40bhp and torque, make a big difference over the Gen 1 NA. Easley make up for the weight of the roof.
In fact due to having less lag and its torque lower down in real world driving I find the GTS a better drive. In mid range kick down the GTS will pull a few cars lengths over the Turbos, before the Turbo S spools up, then its long gone.
I have to say, that after driving 911s for over 35 years that the 991.2 GTS Targa as an over all package, residual value, roof tech, performance, fun to drive etc. Might be the best road driving 911 I have driven.

Great car. Love voodoo.
I bought this the other day. Love it. It's a 4. Fast enough on the new engine. I prefer the new engine to old, at least in the targa format.
I'll see how I get on and may order the GTS to be complete (loving centre locks, alcantara etc).
- PS aberdeen was selling a very low miles GTS that sold in 2 days at list the other day. Nice too but can't bring myself to pay list for pre-owned not to my spec.
