Westbrook storms to victory
Reigning Carrera Cup GB champion dominates opening round
Reigning Carrera Cup GB champion Richard Westbrook scored one of the most important victories of his career on Sunday 3 April when he dominated the opening round of the Porsche Supercup in Bahrain.
Westbrook qualified his Lechner Racing School Team car on pole position, beat off an early challenge from Christian Menzel and went on to win the race by more than three seconds. Multiple Supercup champion Patrick Huisman eventually beat Menzel to second.
"I can’t believe it," said an elated Westbrook. "It was one of those dream weekends; pole, the win and fastest lap! Everything seems to be happening for me at the moment. The new car is unbelievable, " says Westbrook. "It really is a mega car."
Making his debut for the Lechner team, Westbrook dominated the weekend as the latest model Supercup cars had their first race ahead of the Grand Prix of Bahrain. "I made an OK start, but was briefly down to third at the first corner," explained Westbrook. "But I went straight back to second and then pushed Menzel until I got ahead and pulled away." The team was also jubilant as this marked their first Supercup victory after three seasons in the championship.
Now, Westbrook will fly back from Bahrain to contest the opening rounds of the Carrera Cup GB at Donington Park this weekend (9/10 April). "This result is really good for the Carrera Cup GB," says Westbrook. "It shows how high the standard is in Britain."
