I'm busy shopping around for one (or maybe more than one) of the cars that I used to lust after when I was a teenager in the 80's. I don't want to spend more than 6K on each car and my list currently consists of Porsche 944 s2, Lotus Excel, Alfa GTV6 (had one of these before - fantastic car until it imploded in a cloud of rust) and Alfa 75 3.0l.

There isn't any logic to this, they are just cars I've wanted for some time. I'm reasoning that if I don't get one now, chances are I never will be able to, because they won't exist any more.

Views on what to go for/what to avoid very gratefully received.

Go for the Lotus. Too many old 944s about, and very few of the Alfas will have survived in good enough condition to be worth considering. Lotus is rare, fast and should be pretty reliable. Also galvanised chassis and plastic body means they last pretty well.

" Ur" - pronouned "oo-er" and not "U-R" is the german prefix meaning "original".

and continuing the quattro theme go for an "MB" series car - best combination of reliability and performance/handling. 20 valves are reliable, and slightly faster too, but parts cost silly money.
