Moving To Ireland

Any help appreciated apologies for the length of this post;

The inlaws are considering a move to ireland, sligo and roscommon area and me and the wife are considering going with but I need a few questions answering if possible

I've done a lot of research online but it's hard to find the answers;

Are the salaries on the likes of indeed accurate for a industrial plumber (30k+) how much tax would play into that (compared with cost of living cos of being a petrol head etc)

The inlaws are considering 19 acres of land also, with this in mind a offroad rally car would come into play, apparently you can only keep a car offroad (as wouldn't be road legal) for 12 months, is it the same as here where you renew a sorn?

When looking at cars, car tax seems extortionate!! Also 2 year mot?

This is all really confusing, could anyone answer some questions or point me in right direction, as a petrol head potentially interested in moving to this area from dorset,uk

I retired to Ireland two months ago so can only answer a few questions

MOTOR TAX - Yes it is horrendously expensive.

TEST (MOT) - Needed once a car is four years old. Test every two years until ten years old and then every year

If bringing a car from UK you will need to have owned it for six months to avoid paying import tax.

Owning cars in Ireland is not cheap

I visit regularly as we have a lot of customers there plus two offices.
Car tax is horrendous, anything nice is extortionate. Porsche 944 is round 1800Euros Plus the last time I spoke to someone there. Traffic penalties are severe as well.
The MOT test is done by government owned stations & tends to be very black or white, no benefits of the doubt.
Salaries are lower according to the guys in our office.

Best place to look would be www.donedeal.ie or www.carzone.ie

If you have a ph worthy car you would be better off bringing it with you and availing of a vrt exemption

That's handy to know thank you, this is why I'm wondering about tax because all the salaries I see on job adverts are more than I could possibly earn here, if i calculate that I would get taxed 20% on my earnings then it's still at least 500 better a month, but not sure if that's right or the salaries are jacked up.

If we did move I would plan for a diesel saloon family daily.

Plus a offroad/rally/autocross car for the land, so tax and mot wouldn't be a problem (as far as i know..because it would stay off road??)

Not sure a mk6 golf gti edition 35 would be exempt?

(i know it's not the ph worthy car of the century but I'm 24 and the likes of most are still not in reach)

Any car is exempt as long as you have owned it more than six months, in fact you could bring an entire fleet and avail of the exemption.

No we are talking about import tax. Road tax on a 2.0 Golf would be around €570 per year. Not the end of the world. It's only the older/bigger engined stuff that is heavily taxed, forget about anything pre 2008.

Ahh, I see. That's not the end of the world your right, I would want the offroad car to be pre 2006 but then again the tax doesn't matter

You can declare the car off road each year, it's not a problem. I've had an Alfa declared off road since March 2013.

Having done this myself (moved UK-Limerick in Sept'13) I can say that most of this information is very good ! Car ownership can be expensive.. my 2004 W211 E55k AMG is 2,000euro's/year to tax, insurance is also expensive (nearly three times what I as paying the in UK). Tax can be cheaper if car is newer than '08 and is then based on government set emissions tests. Insurance is also expensive on older cars and can be more difficult to get.

There will be VRT payable if you are importing a vehicle which you have owned for less than 6 months and as you can guess the rate can be very expensive if you have a nice vehicle.

That being said... roads are much less busy than the UK and driving can be more pleasurable once you get to know the roads.

Some living costs can be more expensive than the UK, but then some are cheaper as well. Property tax for example is 90e/year, in the UK I was paying over 200£/month. So it evens out.

OP here, so this idea has been floated again.

Looking at property in tipperary and surrounding area, currently rent so no chain etc.

Can't work out why a 3 bed detached house is 100 to 150k ? Why is it so cheap? Is there a catch?

Planning a trip in the next 6 months on a fact finding mission, would need house and surrounding area to be on mains gas (gas engineer)

Any pointers/info appreciated

The team I work with has just got its end of year bonus. My dutch & Irish colleagues paid 51% overall on that months salary plus bonus, me in the UK paid around 34% overall. Our Swedish guy expected to pay 51% bit it turns out there is a special tax rate for bonus & one off payments so he paid 61% overall.

As for house prices they took a real bath around 12 years ago when the tiger economy went wrong. Just getting sorted now according to my colleagues. Some areas slower than others.

I assume you are talking about tax? Why would it be so high?
