Help with which hatchback to buy older lady.
Discussion
Hi. I am helping my mother buy a used car and would appreciate if anyone can give me some guidance.
She is after a hatchback 1.2/1.4
Petrol
3 door/5 door
Manual
Up to 5 years old
Up to £8k
Something that is reliable, safe, comfortable and easy to drive. It is mainly for short journeys as my mum is retired.
She drives an X reg Ford Fiesta at the moment which has been a great car.
Are there any models people would recommend or ones to avoid? Or models that are known to have design faults or common problems? A lot of Vauxhalls in my area have had their whole front end nicked so that has put me of Corsas etc.
Thanks for any correspondence.
Brian

I'd say take a look at the Clio they're a good reliable car & smart looking to.

Just bought my 76 yr old mum a Kia Picanto after she ran a Focus for 6 years. Got a cracking deal on an unregistered run-out model (£9k vs £12.5k list) 5-dr 1.25 petrol, 7 year warranty and great owner reviews. They do a 3-yr service package for £300. This will be her last car and will hopefully will be hassle free. Its nicely built and handles well. I would consider an auto for your mum, I wanted mine concentrating on steering and braking rather than gear changing at her age and its worked well since she went auto on the Focus after a lifetime of manuals.
My mum is just over 60 so not elderly but distinguished (she'd murder me for saying that) but she has an Audi A1 and absolutely loves it.
She tested the Fiesta and the Clio but found both too fussy and awkward. The A1 has everything where yo expect it to be in a car, no touch screen this or hundreds of buttons that.
Still loves the car and had it over three years now.

Genuine question - if she was looking at Fiesta / Clio, why didn't she just by the VW version of the Audi A1, ie Polo? It's the same car, but has one more seat and costs thousands less. She tested the Fiesta and the Clio but found both too fussy and awkward. They 'aint just for old folk...
Ours has been great.
Indeed, a mate of mine has just put a k24 (Honda Accord Type S) engine with a few modifications into a Jazz, i'm keen to have a go in it!!!!
Ours has been great.
A Jazz has a surprisingly good chassis, in Japan the Jazz/FIT is a popular car to modify and has a completely different reputation, the 1.5 is bit of a junior Type R

Same in Thailand, all the cool kids have a Honda 'Fit' or a Yaris (other than those who are into their pickup trucks) HustleRussell said:

What Honda would give to have that image in Europe. They're now completely stuffed as the old people don't like all the tech in the latest Jazz, some of which does sound iffy, to be fair.

..And of course the younger customers aren't interested due to the image. It doesn't stop them being great cars though! They're now completely stuffed as the old people don't like all the tech in the latest Jazz, some of which does sound iffy, to be fair.
Honda UK should've created a Type S Jazz with about 140bhp.

Mines great, but were more power on offer I would have taken it.
