Is it just me?.....

I've just sent this e-mail to the ITV F1 team.....

e-mail said:
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CAN YOU LOSE THAT STUPID SOUND THAT ACCOMPANIES THE ON SCREEN GRAPHICS?.... IT IS REALLY REALLY ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'M SO IRRITATED THAT I'VE NOW SWITCHED OVER TO SUPERBIKES ON EUROSPORT... MORE EXCITING RACING AND NO STUPID SOUND EFFECTS.

CONCENTRATE ON THE RACING... NO ONE WATCHING IS INTERESTED IN THESE PATHETIC GIMMICKS!

I haven't heard any sounds accompanying the graphics...

But there is still too many commercial breaks.

What sounds - apart from the curious emasculated groan which seems to be all that the onboard mics seem to pick up from a modern howling 19,000 RPM V10.

Can't they do better than that?

I must admit that I did not bother watching.

Mainly because ITV are so inept they make it unwatchable.

Too many ads. Clueless presenters ( other than Brundle ) .

Its a poor, poor show.

Agreed the eurosport coverage of bikes ( or any motorsport ) is infinitely more entertaining.

The race was pretty good...

How about watching the race with the radio 5 live commentary supplied from your radio?

Classic from James Allen today (5 laps of watching Button chasing Barrichello) "ooo... that's Button passing somebody! I can't see who!" (As Button passes a solid red car... which Barrichello is driving... it's the only ferrari in the race...).

Martin Brundle was good though... "Have you caught the banker that stole the wheels from your car yet Bernie?"

Aye, the ITV coverage was abysmal today.

Two things which really got my goat …

  • I could clearly see a Jordan slowing down. There was a (yellow) flag symbol on the screen for around two laps. I then noticed, in clear view, a crane lifting a Jordan. Absolutely nothing mentioned about it by either Allen or Brundle.

  • I see the notification of a team / car radio exchange on the team and look forward to hearing it (this is a great addition to the coverage IMHO) and then Allen / Brundle continue to talk over it.

There were also a few points where an interesting tussle was left while they went on to a much less interesting point on the track. I’m guessing though that they take the feed they’re given so benefit of the doubt for ITV on that one.

Cheers,

N

Surely then it was obvious to everyone and didn't need mentioning.

A bit disappointed they didn't mention anything about the Minardis who both managed to finish when there was such a high attrition rate elsewhere.

Not too surprising since they had so many other things to talk about! First time in as long as I can remember that I didn't fall asleep.

The sound (which accompanies the lower screen caption displayed during pre race build up) is subtle in volume but to me is the equivalent of cutting polystyrene or running nails down a black board... it's just so unnecessary! Trust me, once you become aware of it, you will be driven mad!!!

I'm betting it plays havoc with my Dad's hearing aid and tinnitus

Just watched the highlights, they need to get rid if that tit Jim Rosenthal (however u spell it).

Interviewing Alonso at the end, he says,
"Your leading the championship now, can u stay there?"

Alonso replied sensibly, "I dont know..."

"You must know" counters Jimbo!

Sorry, but how the hell can Fernando KNOW that he can stay there!! As if anyone with an ounce of intellect or grasp of reality would say "Yes for sure we can..."

They've done 3 out of 19 races you nob!

And as for sato being talked through the first corner, if I was paying him x millions id expect him to be able to negotiate his own way round the start of a gp! It just suggests how little faith they have in his abilities to me.

Just had to get that off my chest... otherwise bloody good race!

Martin Brundle is the saviour of ITV's coverage, without him i think i would have switched off LONG ago.

I mean, what is the deal with that Ted Kravitz dude in the pit lane? Total cheese face that should be presenting some rubbish on channel 4 on a sunday morning...

I guess its just indicative of F1's corporate hype, gossiping little b*tches bullshit, constantly searching for some sensationalist headline like,

"ALONSO: IM GONNA CRUSH SCHUMI!"... Complete bollox

You can see it on any front cover of Autosport magazine.

And as for the rumours of montoyas injury gettin airtime... SPARE ME! Ron Dennis summed it up perfectly - tennis or motor bike accident, if you dont race you dont get paid

Sorry, Im on a rant mission tonight

Yes indeed, I was being terribly silly. I apologise.

It would have been nice to know what the circumstances of the retirement were. Tell me if I'm being daft.

I can only agree with everything said above! Don't know about the sounds with the graphics though - never spotted it myself! Needless to say, an e-mail like that though will get no respect at all. If it was typed in sentence case and addresses to them properly, you may have even received a reply!

Anyway, regarding the coverage...James Allen drives me crazy! A couple of times in the race I saw things like the Button/Barrichelo thing above (ie "Can't quite see who it is" as Button goes past the only Ferrari left in the race!)

Martin Brundle really is a very good commentator. He also responds to questions that I have in my head. For example - I overheard the pit radio of Alonso when he was on the slowing down lap and he was told not to overtake anyone. I couldn't understand this, and then Martin Brundle mentioned it also - not knowing why. Stuff like that I really enjoy, which is where Martin Brundle's technical experience really comes in.

Also - I like to hear the pit radio. Annoys me when they talk over it, as it's really interesting to hear!

Jim Rosenthal is a complete fool. Did you see his post race interview with Flavio? He made such an arse of himself because the Bennetton team...who had just won...came over, all jolly with spirits! He just got annoyed and told Flav to control them. Plonker! Get in with the spirit!

Anyway, I could moan for ages but equally I want to say that I really enjoyed yesterday's race! Including the commentary! I recorded the race and normally have it on while doing something else, I ended up sitting down solely watching it!!

Some points in ITV's defence.

ITV do not control the race coverage (graphics, when the team radio kicks in, sounds, etc). All they do is top, tail and provide commentary on whatever Bernie's TV production outfit gives them.

Whilst I agree with most of the comments here, they are all spoken by those who have an interest and knowledge of the sport. The vast majority ot those who watch F1 (not just in the UK but across the world) are casual watchers, lacking our insight and as such, benefit from the sort of information we would find banal or obvious.

I'd beg to differ... I think that most people who watch F1 are regular viewers and all get equally irritated. You don't have to subscribe to this forum to be interested in F1.

For the record, the graphics with the sound effects are most definitely some garbage that ITV came up with as they do not appear during the race... thank God!

I dont subscribe to the view that it is to attract new uninformed viewers - surely the aim would be to turn someone who has a mild interest (watches a few races in the season) into someone (like myself) that watches every race without fail.

The major floor is that once they have attracted a new viewer to tune in every race, they too will pick up on the inadequacy of the presenters. For example, rather than ask the same old mundane questions which get the mundane answer it deserves, think of something original!

I suspect it comes from the producers and execs who have no idea what the REAL fan wants to know.

Louise Goodman, pitlane interviewer par excellence...

"So, Nick, no champagne today?"

"There's no champagne here"

Made me chuckle and cringe all at once.
