Well i cant i think of it any other way.

Yesterday i got a letter from student loans company saying 0 payment recieved in 15-16 tax yr.So i think o its ok it must be a typo , find as much payslips as i could last night (7) and ring them up. They only deal with p60s as HMRC "pass" the money from the employer over to them. Bare in mind i was with a single employer during this period and paying ~£100 a month (student finance repayments) through PAYE.

HMRCs automated hotline say they are unable to provide copies of the p60.

The employer has now moved to "group" and the old payroll system cannot be accessed for an old p60 as i cant find my copy .
The only thing i can do now is photocopy those 7 payslips and leave it with student loans company to sort it out with HMRC , to say im pizzed is an understatement...

Has anyone been through this?

Let me get this right, you are claiming that HMRC together with your employer have both coluded to steal the student loan payments from you?

How likely do you really think that this is what actually happended?

Is it more likely, or less likely, than this just being a simple administrative error somewhere between the three different organisations, meaning that your payments have not been correctly allocated to your student loan account?

With the issue made worse by the OP losing half their payslips and their P60.

At this moment i am struggling to remember if i did in fact receive the P60 at all .I will have another look , i do have the P45 but that doesn't state the figures only that i was eligible to re-pay.

I just cant believe that HMRC cannot provide a copy of the p60.

If you are only paying £100pm PAYE tax would you even need to make payment on the loan?

Never went down that road thankfully so not sure what rules would apply to you.

edit - or was the £100 the loan payment?

2nd edit - You were definitely not 'robbed' rolleyes

You don't pay anything on your student loans until after you reach a certain threshold of salary. Are you sure you should be paying it back.

HMRC don't issue P60s, your employer does.

What you have to remember when dealing with HMRC is it is never their fault. It is your responsibility to spot their errors and notify them. No ifs, no buts and don't ever expect anything to be written off no matter how badly they get it wrong.

MIght be worth checking but I'm pretty sure your company needs to keep payroll details for at least 3 years. We're migrating systems now and I've been told this is a regulatory requirement.

That is correct and you can be fined as an employer if you don't

I've had similar issues and the hostile replies are not really helpful.

The student loans company are passed details of how much you have paid once a year by HMRC as I understand it. The loan is usually with you for many years and they will eventually catch up.

I was paying a similar amount almost 10 years ago and I'd go a whole year with interest being accrued and nothing being paid off despite the payments being deducted. They did catch up each year eventually.

Have you created an account online with them and checked on there? If not, google how to do it and it will be more up to date than your statements.

When I changed jobs I was lost in their system for 5 years and so paid nothing, hooray, but they did eventually catch up and I've been lumbered with paying £300 a month ever since. Until August when it's all gone, super hooray.

I infer that the OP's degree was not a degree in English.

Let me get this straight, £100 a month in tax, right? Keeping sums simplistic (ie to the nearest multiples of 10), annual allowance is £10k, that's £200 a week. Basic rate at 20% so if you're paying £100 a month, that means you're earning £500 a month on top of annual allowance.

You don't say if that £100 pcm includes NIC or not, which considering the calculations is irrelvent anyway

Annual allowance is £200 pw add on the £500 pcm brings total monthly wage in the region of £1400 pcm. That's an annual salary of £16,800, even with the rough calculations that's waaaay below the threshold.

With these calculations, you're earning below the threshold at which the 9% repayments start.

On these sums, I would be surprised if you have a) met the threshold for repayment and b) made any repayments.

Edit* Oh hold the horses. NIC. Ignore employers NIC, but employee NIC is iirc around the 12% mark, which rough back of the envelope calculations suggest is about £750 - £800 per annum. (based on my rough estimations of total annual salary based on your ~£100pcm tax). Is THIS where your 'almost £1k' has gone?

No , the £100 is just the repayments to SLC .I think its around £17500 for the repayment threshold.

Are you on plan 1 or plan 2?

Thresholds are different, £18k and £21k and you repay at 9% over those thresholds.

  • edit, threshold for plan 1 is £17,775, you'll need payslips and P60 for refunds if you've overpaid for the year.
If you're paying £100 a month that puts your annual salary in the £30k a year bracket, so yes you will be repaying. Mis read your first post, thought that was £100 a month in tax, not loan repayments.

Just double check the years the repayments were made, loan statements arrived in the last few weeks. Assuming you've done that, I'd say contact SLC and send in copies of wage slips. You can't get replacement P60's, that's why it says keep it in a safe place.

On the face of it, sounds like an admin error. You'll have to phone them and sit on hold listening to Vivaldi's 4 seasons....

Your employer may not be able to provide a copy of your p60 from their old payroll system but have you asked if they can provide copies of the payslips you are missing from that financial year? When i moved over to direct debit i just read them the student loan payment taken for each month up to that point over the phone. Also have you actually spoken to someone at HRMC and asked them what detail they have of the SLC payment for that financial year then you can tie up exactly where the problem may lie.
From speaking to our payroll manager when I was going through the SLC mill they do sometimes randomly request payments are stopped, or started, for no reason (even when you have actually finished paying back sometimes!)

I finished paying mine back last sept yet am still waiting on confirmation of that fact.

Also to agree with the other posters, no you haven't been robbed, there has been an error somewhere so if you don't want it to disadvantage you if you are adamant that you did continue to make payments that whole year then get chasing to obtain the relevant figures needed and narrow down what has happened and where in the chain things have gone wrong, they are not going to do it for you.

Well i managed to hunt down all of the payslips by some miracle .I have sent copies off to SLC , so we will see what happens now that they have the evidence. I will leave them to battle it out with HMRC , from my point of a view as a "customer" i shouldn't have to do anything else.

Since people dont usually update these things ...

I received a letter from SLC stating that they accept my evidence and are now pursuing HMRC for confirmation. So it looks like it will be sorted.
