Where to go from a 981 Cayman? What car!
Discussion
I have just sold my 981 Cayman because I felt it was a bit meh (PDK and electric steering), I was going to buy an older 911 but I've had a few in the past so I fancy trying something different.
Criteria is under £50k, naturally aspirated, manual gearbox or single clutch e.g. SMG, ideally a daily driver for 20k PA but I am open to weekend suggestions.
None from this list as I've owned these in the past few years:
981 Cayman
997 911
987 Cayman
Audi R8 V10
Aston Martin V8 Vantage
VXR8
I've always wanted an E60 M5 so maybe now is a good time, or an E92 M3, but at the same time I'd prefer to avoid family sedan territory.
Ferrari 360 would be right up my street but can't get a good manual for my budget.

Why not try a ragtop of some description...
Really adds an extra dimension to motoring - brings you closer to the noise and the outdoors and your not carcooned in this
all encompassing metal shell on your way to your destination isolated in supreme splendour. I always feel like roof down motoring adds at least 30MPH to the speed your doing and opens another dimension to your drive - in these days of enforced limits that is not a bad thing. Richard Porter I believe wrote something similar in this months EVO.
Try a Boxster S, or a BMW Z cabrio or a Jag F-Type, SLK 55AMG or even a Mustang V8 cab..
I would never now be without one in my garage..

Evora or Exige too hard core.
Although I can appreciate a convertible it's not my sort of thing, I find the novelty wears off pretty quick.
I'm leaning towards an E92 M3 anyway, I don't think one will disappoint coming from a 981. The steering and chassis feedback must be a lot better, and the V8 engine note!

Are you sure? Evora is quite a different car to an Exige. Remarkable ability to thrill and still be reasonably refined. I'd say it's in a class of one if you're looking for a feelsome drive that is also usable.M5 or M3 are pretty big heavy cars.
What attributes are you really looking for? Which aspects of your previous cars are you looking to build on / combine?

I appreciate all cars, so it's not quite what car but what car next?Typically something that is known to be a drivers car, something responsive, which handles well, and typically the benchmark car in its sector.

(Clubsport S is no better really and a chunk more - this car is fully loaded and brand new and Ed 40. They can be had for much cheaper than this)

An interesting post as I have just recently bought a 981 Boxster S. So far I am loving it but I accept the steering isn't the most alive......Criteria is under £50k, naturally aspirated, manual gearbox or single clutch e.g. SMG, ideally a daily driver for 20k PA but I am open to weekend suggestions.

However of all your cars listed they are all less 'fun' in my opinion. I had a 997 and it was a manual but that didn't engage me anymore than my current PDK. It also had the -20mm and lsd chassis so it wasn't some type of soft version.
No idea about a 987.
An R8 is boring and 4wd.... Just don't get them
Astom martin - they are very soft and whilst sounding lovely they are definitely more GT than sports car.
VXR8 - sounds the dogs and can be tuned to a million brake horsepower but it isn't exactly a sports car.
E60M5 or E92 Bmw are nowhere near as sports car/fun as a Cayman.
So far I am loving my Boxster S with PSE, PTV and PASM etc etc......
If you want something more sporty you seriously need to consider a Lotus as the rest of your list is just a backwards step.
Reading the op my first thought would be Evora. It would seem the ideal and logical alternative to a Boxster/Cayman.
My 2nd thought would be a Corvette.
I see both have already been suggested already. And glad I'm not the only one thinking this.
Slightly different type of car but the UK spec Mustang is probably worth a look if you are wanting a fun daily.
And if all else fails, go grab a test drive in a new MX-5. I guarantee you won't be disappointed

I'd say go & try an Evora.
