The 2.5 TDI is probably the worst engine (reliability, economy, performance, refinement) Audi have ever made, if hooked up to the multitronic (probably the nastiest gearbox Audi have made) You'll have a true gem.

I have to agree with the above regarding the gearbox but the 2.5tdi in the one I had ran faultlessly but I have heard it's not one of VAG's best.

I'm not sure what your budget is but have you considered a CLK270cdi? These don't come in convertible form but all the windows drop away & if you find one with a sunroof then you get very close to convertible fun, they also don't have a DPF.

2004 CLK270 Avantgarde 78k (this is a Facelift model) it's also advertised twice for £1000 more from a dealer

Or if it has to a convertible:

A CLK200 Should get you to 30mpg

The 2.5 engine is a pretty agricultural thing. Of that era A4 I would definitely be looking at the 1.8T

Just realised the cabrio comes with the later 163bhp 2.5tdi, better smoother engine.

Still prefer the 1.8T manual though.
