New cupra 300 vs used golf r?
Discussion
Hi guys. After a new family car that will provide some smiles at the weekend.
My local dealer is offering a new 300 cupra at £21k ish, standard 5 door manual.
Obviously there is lots of used golf r's around that price, a quick search shows my ideal spec (5 door manual) to be availably 1-2 years old with 10k miles for the same £21k.
Haven't driven either yet but which would you buy and why?

Having driven a Cupra 290 and a golf R back to back a couple of times I'd suggest that the 300 is going to be the sharper drive. The golfs interior is a little nicer. Once moving the Cupra feels like a quicker car,
The biggest advantage of the golf is it's 4wd, so it is quicker from a standstill.

I have a mk7 Golf R estate and love it. Have owned performance Seat's too.
I would only take the Seat over the R, because it's new and then you know the history of the car. The R hatch has a tiny boot, so the Seat is much more practical.
The price is really good it seems to me. If it was new vs new I would take the VW, because I don't really like the tame looks of the Seat's. I still prefer the looks of my old 55 plate Cupra R225 over any newer models. I had a newer shape 07 plate FR, so have had experience of that.
I also much prefer the 4wd feel than loads of front wheel power with torque steer, which gets boring pretty fast. Cornering and grip on the R, with decent tyres, is pretty amazing.
Both lovely cars and am sure you will make the right choice for you.

I find £21k very hard to believe. As mentioned £30k on AT. £9k off a just released car ?!
I'm not posting a link up till I have a deal done one way or another as they only have a few cars left last this price but I'll post up tomorrow possibly.Cheers for the advice guys. Can't go wrong either way it seems. Decisions decisions.
Not the 300, but have a 290 black edition right now. Spent quite a while with a golf R (not owned though).
Golf pro's:
4WD if the traffic light grand prix is your thing
Interior is a small step up from the cupra (marginal in this generation)
Image over the SEAT
Traction in the wet, for the first week in the cupra you need to feather the throttle to get used to it
More interesting colours available over the 290 (I know more colours are available for the 300)
Cupra pro's (for my car spec):
Alcantara/leather bucket seats are leaps and bounds ahead of the golf's seats
More standard equipment
Not as common, R's are as common as clouds in the sky
Quicker from a rolling start and lighter
Feels a lot sharper in the corners
It's one of those things that only your wallet and test drive can decide.

That's the offer. There's a little more negotiation room also

Apologies for doubting. Thats an incredible deal. Not sure what extra costs would be involved getting that to England. I'm looking to lease one but that price is tempting to buy. That's the offer. There's a little more negotiation room also

That sets my 'too good to be true' alarm bells ringing!
Aren’t leases on these about £9k over two years?
In which case that price must surely mean it’s the same price as a New (at List Price) model is expected to sell at after two years?
in which case one could buy it and then sell after two years after having effectively spent nothing but money for fuel, tax and insurance??

Did you go for the Cupra in the end up? If still undecided, let me make it easier - the offer has now expired
I was going to go for it and made an enquiry today.
Missed it. Rang up an hour after I posted this thread and the last one had been sold that morning. To a customer of mine coincidently.

I'm lease adverse so not interested in one even if it has the potential to save a few quid.
Golf r's are certainly tempting at the minute, plenty below £20k with nominal miles/24 months old.
