E24 engine upgrade to M6 or better...
Discussion
Hello All
Just popped over from the Griffith forum for a bit of advise.
I've got a late 635csi highline which I'm going to fettle.
The car is pretty impressive in standard spec but...........
I want to make one of the nicest big-coupes around, my limited knowledge tells me to upgrade the engine to a 24v M6 unit (or better!!!).
Anyone have any thoughts/ideas/experience - I really do want the BEST for this project (but I'm not a millionaire!!).
Your advice would be greatly appreciated

You would be better off buying an M635 as the cost of the conversion would be more than selling your nice 635 and buying a good M6. A friend of mine is however doing a conversion on a 628 and s going to put a 4.4 BMW V8 with a SLK supercharger. That six once completed should be good for 400BHP+.
You are probable looking at spending £4000 - £6000 to do a proper job as you need to look at suspension, brakese, antiroll bars etc.
If you want to uprate your current engine you can get them up to about 260 - 280bhp quite reliable by uprating the cam, 6 branch manifold, ported and polished head, uprated pistons, but again you are talking around £3000.
I would suggest putting a post on www.bigcoupe.com forum which is a six series only website and forum.
Hoe this helps

I was begining to think no-one cared!!!
In the meantime I have been posting on 'bimmerforums' and had some advice from our friends across the pond.
Prior to that I discovered that I could take a M5 lump from a later car (S38 I think??!?) and get about 310BHP and with a few mods fit it in the 635 - this really got me excited as it was higher spec that the M6 @ 285BHP.
This M5 engine was the start of the discussion on the bimmer forum, someone eventually pointed out that there was a company offering a turbo conversion I could add to my 'stock' 3.5 lump and get 300 - 400BHP depending on how far I wanted to go (and how deep my pockets were!!).
So I'm awaiting some e-mails which I will add the pertinent points here.
Lastly, your pic on your profile is stunning, have you had the car painted??

Just got an e-mail from TCD in the states and their kit only fits LHD. They did offer a 'partial NOS turbo' but I think it's back to the M-Power for me!
My car other than the odd panel is original paint. Only the front drivers side wing has been changed. The paint is probable good due to the amount of polish i apply.
With regards to your engine project i have driven an M635 with a 3.6M5 engine, very quick. Another link for you could be Linden Special Vehicles who specialise in making and fitting supercharger conversions to BMW's. For example the 4.4V8 can be tuned to 450bhp safely by them. If you put a post on Google you will find them.
Hope this helps.

Again thanks for the info, I'm posting quite alot on this 'forums.bimmerforums.com' as TVRPaul and I'm getting good and friendly advice - there's one or two of them that are very clued-up, so it's worth a look.
You are in Surrey, I'm on the coast but work in Guildford and I see that you arrange/organize the odd meet - anything happening in the near future??
Paul.
OOOOPPPPSS - Just seen the Newlands Corner post.

I've made some progress on this project and I will post where I'm at now in the hope that it may help someone else in the future.
As its the first time I've 'played' with a BMW I'm sure someone will be able to advise me when i get stuck.
I visited 'Beemer Redeemer' in Bristol and agreed to purchase a 1991 M5 engine giving about 315BHP (so I'm already ahead of a M6 in it's factory configuration!!).
As my 'Toys' piggy bank was empty I asked to pay and collect engine at the end of April and they agreed - a good sign if you ask me, these people are also genuine enthusiasts.
I then found a gearbox from a M6 about a week ago and committed to purchase that as it was a beauty - I had to let Mark @ Beemer Redeemer down again and send half now and half the end of next month. Again he agreed - I like this flexible approach.
So I've got a G'Box at home and an engine at the end of the month - then the fun begins!!! I'll take pics etc and post results.

Northern Paul,
I want to see the results of your work. Sounds a good fun project. Once my own piggy back funds are looking a little fuller i am planning to tune the M30 engine to B10 spec. I hope to spend around £3000 and get around 280-300bhp and 260 - 280lbs/ft of torque. Currently i have two exspensive project on the go. I have a custom designed by me induction system going in which will give me a ram affect of cold air. Plus i have sitting in my garage a set of new Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs and Racing dynamic roll bars that are waiting to be fitted.
For your conversion you need to seriously look into converting those brakes and suspension otherwise you will struggle to apply the power and the brakes will not be up to it.
