15k a year, dieselgate

Hi all

I'm looking for a sporty-ish petrol car that will give me a decent MPG, 35-40+ for somewhere between 3 and £400pm.

I was inches away from buying a second hand C class 250d about a month ago (350pm 3 years) before circumstances got in the way and I ended up having to delay purchasing. Just after this the government announced it's diesel plans so I'm now pretty wary of sinking a large sum of money into a diesel that in 3-5 years time will be banned from a lot of major cities.

I'm relatively young on a good salary so I want a nice looking, enjoyable to drive car. I've been tootling around in a decade old peugeot 308 for the last few years (it was my first car) and I think it's about time I treated myself.

I thought about getting a daily driver and a more enjoyable weekend car but that seemed far too extravagant and parking is at a premium where I live. Also, insurance is still pretty high for me, quote on the c250d was a little over a grand, so insuring two cars seemed like a mad prospect.

My current choice would be an Audi TT 2.0 TFSI, because it seems pretty good bang for your buck and looks exceptional.

EDIT: Another reason I don't want a diesel is that I saw a post on here the other day saying they're not worth it unless you drive 20k+ miles a year.

In a similar vein to the TT but more practical; the wife has just got an A250 (engineered by AMG version), its great fun and will give circa 40mpg.

I looked at the A classes before I decided on the C class, not really a fan of the look of the A or the CLA.

Practicality wise most of the time it'll just be me, with my other half jumping in the passenger seat every now and then. I think I can count on one hand the number of times my rear seats have been used in the last 12 months..
