is this a 'tadts' thing? my oil pressure gauge is all over the place - hops up and down on bumps, bends, on throttle and off it. Car evidently had a large red low oil pressure warning light fitted which I 'fixed' as the bulb wasn't in - then rapidly unfixed as it kept coming on and off on any sort of standard drive.....
is there a simple fix?

They don't all do that.
Usually the light and gauge are fed off different senders (pretty pointless if they aren't), so if they are both flickering you may have engine oil issues and need to get that looked at. Could be pump/pressure relief/starvation issues.
If they are both fed off the same sender it is possible the sender has an issue, but usually they either work or die - flickering would be unusual.
Check all the wiring for bad connections/grounds.
Find out if you have a single sender for both gauge and light.
If dual senders you have big issues.
If a single sender find out how it is wired - are the gauge and light in parallel? If so then it could be the sender. If wired in series (bad, pointless) it could be wiring, or sender.
In any case I wouldn't be driving far until the cause is identified.

Slightly different perspective. I think it's most likely not to be OP problems. The standard OP sender is crap and it's perfectly possible the light is driven from the same source.
But definitely worth checking before further use. You can solve the OP sender problems by either changing to a mech gauge or by fitting a new standard OP sender, but with a remote fitting. That stops it being shaken apart being screwed into the block. Think Automotive are good people to buy this kind of stuff from.
