I've been offered a 996 Coupe Manual with 115k for £8k. Silver with grey leather.
The car is a Cat D but in great condition with a recent bill for £6k including IMS upgrade.

Does this look like good value? Looking on AT/PH/eBay it seems market value should be £9-10k but it's very hard to price a Cat D.

Depends on the damage/repair. But you're looking at a 911 for £8k, if thats not a good deal then what is?

Would you keep it or move it on? If you're going to keep it for a long time then the value would only go up irrespective of whether its a total loss or not, it will just trail the rest by a margin.

Id keep it for a short time and then move it on. Whilst profit isn't the key motive, I wouldn't buy it if I'm going to lose money as I don't really need the car.

Ok so you don't need the car, would you actually use it? If not then its probably best leaving it. Cat D doesn't only affect the price, it will also make it harder to sell so you have that to contend with too. If you've been offered it then they sound incentivised to sell, you might be able to get a better deal. The fact its had such a large bill both a positive and a negative depending on the buyer in my experience. Personally I'd buy it and enjoy it then sell it when ready or put it in a suitable auction where it could make money, knowing what the damage was and how it was repaired and who repaired it also helps to put buyers at ease.

Even a relatively minor accident could put a low value car into cat D, so I suppose you need to clarify when the event was relative to the cars value at the time.

And potentially, the older it gets and the cheaper (potentially ) all 996's get, the harder it will be to punt on. If your mindset was to buy it and run it into the ground it might be a clearer choice.

Prices of 996s aren't going down though, they've been turning around and going back up

If you're looking to move it on I'd avoid a cat D. Just brings up a bit of an unknown on value and makes it harder to shift.

If you were going to use it - cheap daily and run it into the ground or strip it into a track weapon then def.

What year. If it's a 98/99 (cable throttle car) grab it with both hands and keep hold of it for a while!

Just been to check out the car. It seems tidy enough, but one concern was under the oil filler cap.

Is this normal for 911's that haven't had many recent long runs? The oil cap itself was clean, and this photo was taken after a 20 minute drive:

Yes, normal. Caused by condensation.

If not cleared by a good, long Italian tuneup then you should be concerned.

100% Normal. Even my air-cooled ones get it in the filler neck!

ETA Now I've looked again on a better screen I have to say that is quite a lot of salad cream. It is indicative of LOTS of short runs.
