OK Pistonheaders - three large changes in my life coming up and I'm heartbroken at the realisation my current dream garage won't work.

New house; kid (2 in total now); new job that involves 100 mile round trip commute (vs. previously walking..!); wife who just passed her test (at 34...I know) and needs some wheels

I currently am in the insanely fortunate position to own a C7 RS6 and Caterham Supersport R. It's my my dream garage but it's not going to suit the changes above.

I am crumbling under the permutations - if we assume £50k to spend what would you suggest I buy with the following conditions.
- 1 car must be drivable by a new driver
- I want to enjoy my 100 mile commute (and as such, will accept hefty fuel bills)
- I want to continue to have lots of fun on track days

As I say...totally crumbling with options...I bet you guys have some great ideas...

My current best thinking is Abarth 500 (wife) + fairly 'used' GTR (track + commute in one hit)....but maybe I should go for Golf GTD (wife) + prev shape Cayman S (commute) and rent a Caterham R300 for Bookatrack track days?

And no, I don't expect any sympathy for what must be one of the world's leading FWPs (first world problems...)

Abarth 500/595 is not very practical if you have children. The boot is good enough for 2 weekend bags only and if you require child seats access to the back is very tight which makes getting a child/seat in and out quite hard.

However if you don't need to do that then they will keep a smile on your face I'm still enjoying every drive (and commute) in mine.

3 cars is the solution. 2 cars in your circumstances will always be too compromised. face up to that reality and you'll get a solution sooner.
hire a track car or build a cheap lightweight.

Another vote for this, except I'd get a petrol Beemer because I don't like driving diesels.

26000 miles a year commuting?

I'd be negotiating some work from home days or relocating.

My office is 140 miles each way - but I only have to do this trip 2-3 times a month (and they pay for me to do it)

Fiesta Ecoboost?

What about a Megane RS for the daily/track car? I do it with mine, and it's almost perfect. 35ish on a run, 26-28 around town, and seriously capable on a circuit.

Keep what you got and buy a 3rd cheap, but reliable car for the missus.

Had a very similar line up 3 years ago and a similar change in circumstances.

Changed my Mercedes E63 to a Golf R (and now Golf R estate) I do about 30,000 miles a year in it, with DSG gearbox and active cruise make the commute a breeze. Over 300bhp so it's fast when needed and relatively fun on twisty roads. Insanely cheap to lease even taking big mileage into account and will do over 32mpg

Will leave plenty of money left over to keep weekend toy or get the other half something nice

This is a great shout - so you moved to an Estate Golf R - did you find you needed the space? I think they don't look as flash as a Hatchback but it seems the thinking man's choice to this deal.

Lots and LOTS and people saying 'keep the Caterham'. I think there is a message there...

Yes now have the Golf R estate in a subtle night blue colour, really is a very good all round car, have a remap on it so about 350-360 Bhp now which is quick enough.

Plenty of space for kids, dogs etc. Really big useful storage space under the boot floor for keeping all the junk,
