With Sat nav & 18 inch alloys.
Has he made a terrible mistake?
I tried my best to convince him that there were better options to no avail.
Yes, terrible mistake, surely his alloys will be nicked, but only after he gets shot during a stickup for his satnav, right after he has crashed that terribly unsafe car into a tree at a milion miles an hour, whilst paying too much for insuranceHas he made a terrible mistake?

Sorry, but apart from an insignia being a bit boring, what mistake would he have made?

The Insignia is a dull but worthy car, and in my experience a somewhat more solidly constructed option than a Mondeo. The problem is the 1.8 NASP engine. I don't know if it's because it's mapped in an odd way for emissions reasons, or if the car is just too heavy, but it's almost unbelievably gutless in the Insignia with no low down pull and thrashy and breathless when you actually try and rev it. It feels far, far slower than the paper figures would have you believe and safely overtaking anything other than a tractor is almost impossible.Sorry, but apart from an insignia being a bit boring, what mistake would he have made?
I'm no snob about slow cars, and don't subscribe to the "dangerously slow" PH thing, however in this case it's so far off what you'd expect from a modern car that I really would describe it as terribly slow. It ruins what would otherwise be a perfectly decent car. It's odd because a 1.8 petrol engine always worked fine in a Vectra or countless other similar sorts of cars.

Hired one once and can concur, definitely amongst the slowest and most gutless cars I've ever driven.
Other than the slowness, I quite liked it though, perfectly adequate for a slog up and down a motorway.
My experience exactly. With the diesel engine it's a perfectly pleasant car, comfortable and quiet. GM are not really given credit for what a decent car the Insignia is, and well styled too. If I just wanted reliable transport I'd have one.Other than the slowness, I quite liked it though, perfectly adequate for a slog up and down a motorway.

Insignias are actually quite a decent car. The 1.8Sri is poor engine choice for it as its relatively underpowered and not a big pile or torque.Has he made a terrible mistake?

No doubt he bought it cheap enough though.
I'd personally have spent the bit extra and went for a 2.0CDTI or at worst the 1.6CDTI which is decently torquey.
Not the end of the world as a car, not the best engine choice though.
Yes, as others have said, a perfectly reasonable car ruined by the engine choice.
I had one as a company car back in 2010, which was a 160bhp diesel which suited the car really, and to this day I still don't think I've driven or been a passenger in a more relaxed, stable motorway cruiser so I'd sayVX/Opel done well with them.
Quality of some of the materials were very poor though, and at 3 years and 100k old, it felt and looked like it had covered double that. The 3 series that followed it looked and drove almost new after the same treatment.
