Mulling over a change in winter daily and am wondering how much of a bad idea an early Gen II 997 PDK would be...

Would need to be a 4. And a targa would be nice ideally. Saw one sold for sub-40k in the classifieds.

The default choice is a 3-4yr old RS4 to replace my much loved B7. But always liked 911s so am wondering if it might be good to change smile

997 Gen2 seem to have a good reputation for reliability, with none of the engine issues associated with the Gen1, and I haven't seen anything to concern me about the PDK box - in fact I've seen more reports of failed VAG DSG gearboxes, although in fairness there will be more of them around..

If you have any concerns at all, the OPC warranty can be extended to cover the car until it's 15 years old.

And for reference if you do want a 4, then the Targa was only produced with that drivetrain which will make that search a bit easier.

I've bought a 997.2 as a daily, albeit a boggo Carrera 3.6 manual.

Did a lot of research beforehand and haven't uncovered any horror stories about either engine or PDK 'box. There are some minor items to look out for such as coolant hoses and exhaust heat shields which both seem to perish at the age you are looking at but buy from an OPC or a respected specialist and all this should be sorted.

If going the PDK route, make sure its got the Sports Chrono software and the upgraded paddle shift steering wheel.

Targa is great but beware that the roof is likely to rattle. A mate had one and despite numerous visits to the supplying OPC was never able to cure it.

.2 PDK boxes do fail or leak (and thus Porsche opt to replace), but often early in their life. Mine was replaced under warranty with approx 17k miles on the clock. Look on the US forums as well, people mention failures in there too.

What makes you think it would be a bad idea?
A 9 year old well looked after 911 is much more preferable than a 3 year old leased Audi which has most likely been ragged!

Unless a Targa is an asbolute must have I would avoid....couple of mates both have 993 Targa's which they bought more than 10 years ago (so the 993's were a similar age to the 997's you're looking at now) . Both have had problems and they're expensive to fix....obviously the 997 should be better and lessons learnt but I would think twice. One of them wants to do a total respray of his car but he's been told by the bodyshop a Targa costs £4k more to paint than a normal car because of the costs of replacing and fitting the Targa....oh and they are likely to need replacement parts

Thanks guys.

Looks like it might be worth following prices of these too then.

Does this age of 997 have a decent media system (memory stick capability, searching by artist/album/genre etc etc). I know, I know. I used to think that sort of thing was frippery too. But it's for daily use smile

Ref the RS4, they're great cars that are very hard to beat for cross country capability with space and fun. And 4wd is a must have but very well done in the RS4.

When I bought my current one it already had 70k miles on it but still feels pretty solid. So I'm comfortable that they take the abuse (DSG the big question mark on the B8 as all other foibles apply to my B7).

Ref targas...not essential, but a clear roof lifts the interior a lot, and the kids love it smile

If the has the media interface in the centre console, it can support memory sticks, and has at least artist/album search - PCM is fairly decent, but not perfect.

You will find probably find the 4WD system a bit different to the Haldex of the RS4, as it's very rear biased in comparison - when I moved from a B5 RS4 I did noticed I had to get used to the system on the Gen 1 Turbo.

The DFI engines on the Gen II aren't immune from bore scoring. See 911 & PW.

Except the Audi won't need new a new battery, cooling pipes, tandem oil pump (does the Gen 2 have this rust magnet?), exhaust fixings, front rads and /or condensers....
