Out of interest, what do you think would be the quickest car with a wheel bhp per tonne below 135.

The reason I ask is a few friends and I are considering competing in time trials but sticking to the lower formula and a budget of just £3000. The car must keep its full interior and no rose joint suspension or engine swaps are allowed. Basically the car needs to be pretty standard with mild modifications allowed.

Are newer cars much better than older ones?
Turbo vs n/a
Light weight or more power?
Fwd, rwd, 4wd?

What do you think would be the quickest?

I'd be thinking hot hatch territory.

Surely a Clio 172 falls into sub 135 WHP/Tonne?

Maybe a bit more actually.

Ford Fiesta ST150?

Mk3 MR2 perhaps? Kerb weight of near enough 1000KG, power at the flywheel of 140bhp.

Should be able to pick one up way under budget which leaves room for sorting the brakes, tyres, etc.

The 172 seems to fall above the 135whp/tonne mark. I did think about the twinge too but it doesn't actually seem that quick. So far the front runners are a fiesta st150, 106gti and a corsa 1.6 sri.

Great shout for a mr2. Also wondering about a mk4 golf gti or Ibiza cuppa with the 1.8t engine. Even a TT to gain 4wd for the wet days too.

Considering you're very limited in ways of reducing weight, I'd prioritise weight over power IMO. Keep it NA as well, easier to look after, less to go wrong due to abuse at the track etc. Will be lighter on the consumables as well.

Somehow I just don't see that being competitive against something much newer. I'd actually really like to run my 205 but it would be in the class above, and I wouldn't want to give it track abuse.

Probably tricky to get one for your budget - I'm not sure what the discipline entails though and what sort of front runners the class has at present

How is the power at wheels figure derived? Calculation or dyno run?

Dunno run at a specified place by all competing.

Just seen the budget was £3000 so that rules out the VX.

Clio 172 would work.

They make about 167 BHP and weigh around 1,100 kg standard. Add in trans losses. Boom.

NB2 Mx5? 1000ish kg (probably 1100 with fuel and driver), 140ish bhp at crank. Tight ratio 6 speed box. With an obvious advantage of being very good around bends too.

I'm sure you could strip it out and get someone to map it for limited peak power as well...

You don't want to strip it out if the rules dictate keeping the interior
