Matt,

walking up bloody great hills in the pi55ing rain

That's what you do in the Lakes. Go to Skegmess or Clacton or Alton Towers instead.

Anybody been on Nemesis? Jesus!!

As already mentioned, walking up hills in th pi55ing rain (and there's nowt wrong with that IMO) is the thing in the Lakes. As the locals like to say, 'the lakes didn't come out of the ground'.

If you want the scenery, don't want too much traffic and 'pretend' walkers (those who wear their whole, hiking boots & waterprrof get up around the shops in Ambleside or Keswick town centre), you could do worse than stay somewhere like The Old Dungeon Ghyll in Langdale, or the more remote Wasdale Inn, at Wasdale head. Both places have a decent bar (v important) and are smack in the middle of some fantastic views. Never know, it might even inspire you to do a bit of walking (in the rain of course).

Driving is pretty good in the Lakes - as long as you avoid times of the day when tourists are out and about. Try any time 6pm to 9am and you will find the 'decent' roads really quiet.

My favourite route - Ambleside, Wrynose, Hardknott, Eskdale Green, Ulpha Fell, Coniston and back. Don't even think of doing this route if tourists are around, you will get soooo frustrated.

Hire a rowing boat at Keswick. Lovely scenery and decent pubs.

Yeah, Grizedale is great for a good walk. For driving, I'd agree macnud, in addition try the main drag from Ambleside to Keswick. Mostly open (sometimes sweeping) road with plenty dual carriageway bits. Good views, too, but you'll probably be cocentrating too hard to appreciate fully.

Depending on what car you're in, you may want to try Kirkstone Pass too. Very nice pub at the end!

Something surreal sir ?

Explore Hodge Close. Ask around before going or you may not find the best bits.

There’s an excellent road out of Penrith, it got voted best drivers road and if your going in something fun then it’s worth a blast, the TVR was great fun although I cooked the brakes, which I haven’t managed to do since even on the track!

You could eat lots of good cheap food as well.

I would recommend Staffield Hall to stay in, it’s very out of the way with some nice views.

Matt, could always just get pissed!
The Coniston Brewery is in, well em, Coniston and brews Coniston Bluebird which one the Champion Beer of Britain a few years back. It's next to the Black Bull pub which is quite handy!
Just don't take your girlfriend! I took mine in June and she's now my fiancee and my bank balance is diminishing!
Cheers.... Andrew
