Who becomes a politician?
Discussion
Someone once said that "I wouldn't vote for anyone who wanted to be in power" and they're right.
Who wants to become prime minister?
Who at your school said "I want to be a politician when I grow up"?
It's the swotty kids isn't it? The ones that no one talked to. The ones that had no mates.
I've come to this conclusion by seeing Charles Kennedy on TV the other night. He is Martin Prince from the Simpsons.
Who do you think decides to try to run the lives of the rest of us?

The kids that get beaten up when they are in school. After years of torment, something inside snaps and they want revenge, but being swotty; physical violence is not the way (swotty parents probably told them that violence solves nothing and that they need to use their brain)
So they plan their career path into parliament, where they live the life of Riley and take vengeance of the ones that destroyed their childhood. Still a spod though at the end of the day.

A lot of people become MPs with the best of intentions. A guy I know is standing for the Lib Dems in May. He's a genuine guy who feels he's got the skills to make a difference. Of course, if he gets in (was that a cat in hell i just saw?) he'll be captured by the system and end up being more concerned about his own position than the the job he's supposed to be doing.
Politics, like any other job, is an arse covering exercise. The political ramblings in whitehall are no different to the back stabbing, two faced avarice that goes on in any modern office/workplace (agreeing with the boss even though he's wrong for personal advancement etc), its just amplified a million times because the political manoevres are open to public scrutiny. Politicians deserve a lot of what they get, but imagine you were a politician, and then imagine what the press could do with the skeletons in your closet

Yes i'm sure that is true about having good intentions when they start out and thinking about their constituency but this is my theory:
nobody should vote at the next election and then none of the candidates would get their deposit money back.....simple payback for robbing us blind.

I don't drink, I don't smoke, I have never tried any non-prescribed drugs, never knownlingly broken a law (other than the obvious, oops I've done 31mph there), haven't stood for any political or environmental parties/riots/campaigns...
I haven't lived!
I reckon you should have a proven track record AT LEAST as director of a successful company (preferably that you started) before you can become a politico.
Simple reason being, none of these feckers have to show that they can manage a household budget, let alone a bloody country-sized one.

This thread puts me in mind of the Blackadder III episode when they're filling in the MP application form:
Blackadder: Any history of insanity in the family? Tell you what, lets cross out the in; any history of sanity in the family? Non whatsoever...
Blackadder: Have you got a criminal record?
Baldrick: Absolutely not!
Blackadder: C'mon baldrick, you're going to be an MP for God's sake! I'll just put fraud and sexual deviancy.

Discovered recently that a guy I was at school with is now the MP for Ipswich, Chris Mole.
Can't reconcile my memories of a lanky streak with a Rod Stewart mullet and a dedicated David Bowie fan as now being one of Billy Liar's acolytes who doesn't seem to do anything else than agree with his leader according to his parliamentary records

A wise man (no doubt someone here can tell us who it was) once said, "Any person who wants to become a politician should automatically be banned from the job."
Given that the "want", as noted by others above, is symptomatic of a desire for power over others, this statement actually makes sense as a screening process!
