On May 3 I need to drive my 996 from Croydon to Alpbach - a few miles beyond Innsbruck - in a day, and drive back on May 5. I'm thinking channel tunnel and autobahns but don't relish the Brussels by-pass or the potential Lille- Charleroi-Namur crawl either. NE France autoroutes via Rheims look better though boring with pretty certain speed traps en-route and unpleasant peage surprises lying in wait.

I'm quite, quite willing to leave at 3am - 4am in the morning to get a good start. Google Maps has come up with two potential routes avoiding the NE France and Belgium traffic choke-points which are attached as images. So does anyone have route recommendations for making fast and enjoyable progress while avoiding well-known traffic choke points?

Image 1 is via Munich:

Image 2 is going through mountains NW of Innsbruck and could take an hour or so longer but go through better scenery than round Munich:

The A8 and A99 around Munich can suffer from pretty bad traffic jams - and from what you have said it would appear that you would be getting to that point around the afternoon rush hour. If it was me I would therefore go for option 2.

Have you looked if the Dusseldorf to Innsbruck motor rail timings work for you? Leaves Dusseldorf around 9pm iirc.

French coppers have a non-British attitude to speeding. They only seem
to bother to get their books out over 100 mph. Substantially more civilised than the Brits.

Both your routes seem to use the Pirmasens - Landau section.
It's a few years since I've been there, but AFAIK, it's not autobahn.

Brussels can be blocked / busy during rush hour and Lille ring road needs care,
but I've never in over 25 years had trouble in the Charleroi - Namur area.

Be a shame to have a 996 and not get it on the autobahn ASAP.

Almost all Germans will get out of the way for a 996. Seems more
fun than sat on the cruise at 95 mph in France. At least the variability
of the autobahn will keep you awake.

Lille ring road isn't too bad, except for about 7am to 6pm :-)

Thank you for the replies. The motorail option was dismissed straight away I'm afraid - it's driving all the way for me :-) Good points about Munich rush hour and limited Liile traffic jams appreciated as are the ones about Charleroi and Namur and getting on German autobahns early.
Cheers.
