Going to NY tomorrow!

I have bought the cheapest flights known to humanity, booked a super-duper hotel on Central Park and told the reservation manager that I'll be proposing to my GF (so can they put me in a room with a great view), bought the salt and vinegar crisps that my NY cousin craves, borrowed 2 decent guide books, and checked my passport / travel insurance etc.

My question to the well-travelled PH population is this:

If you had 5 days in NY, what would be the top 3 things that you would do?

Please bear in mind that I have never even been to the USA before.

Take her to the Rainbow Room, it's a restaurant with the most amazing views over the city especially at night with the snow (if there is any).

Any of the galleries such as the Met. Also, if you are interested in such things, as I am, the American Museum of Natural History is wonderful. I spent a whole day there enthralled by it all, but I am sure you can certainly spend half a day having a great look around.

Take her to a show as well. When I was there last, in January, I went to the Mel Brooks show "The Producers". Very funny and well worth seeing. Also seen Phantom on Broadway, definately recommend that as well if it's your thing.

Also there are the classic tourist sights such as Empire State, Statue of Liberty etc. that you should try and do. I wouldn't bother with Ellis Island, because whilst interesting to some degree, it perhaps has more appeal if you are American. Spending an afternoon moving around "The Village" is pretty cool as well, lots of bookshops and cafes to stop at.

That's all I can think of really! It's a great place, been there three times now and loved every trip, there is just so much to see and do, and I loved the people over there! Oh, and best of luck with the proposal! Sure it will go great!

I wouldn't bother going to Chinatown or Little Italy, but Greenwich Villiage is worth a browse around.

Also go and have a look at Grand Central Station, its worth a look.

As museums go I recommend the Guggenheim and Metropolitan, but the Metro is HUGE so needs quite a few hours.

A trip on the Statten Island Ferry is also worthwhile, for picture purposes of the Statue and looking back on the mainland (although not quite as impressive now ), I wouldn't bother getting off on Statten Island but it looks like you may have time to do so if you so wish. Also Ellis Island is worth a visit too for history sake.

Look up a place called Asalt and Battery

Fab Fish and Chips in Manhattan.

Get a Big Brown Bag from Bloomingdales, wonder at the size of Macy's and Saks 5th Avenue is mecca for the ladies.

GCS is well worth a look and Greenwich Village is probably the coolest place in NYC.

A great town.

You lucky man!NYC is a wonderful city.....

I would do The Empire State Building,Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island.

& Bloomingdales/Maceys.

Grand Central Stn is well worth a visit,as is Central Park.

Thanks boys and girls. I'm particularly looking forward to strolling around and looking at the massimo buildings, eating hotdogs from street vendors, and going in yellow cabs.


I have heard that cocktails in the Grand Met hotel are pretty good, and have been given details of some decent restaurants.

Will definitely try to see a show when we're there. Apparently Denzel is starring as Marcus Brutus in Julius Caesar at the moment, but not sure this is the romantic evening that it could be!

yes they've hijacked the cheapo silver bracelets, but tiffany diamond jelewery is a different kettle of fish. I can't see our burberried friends Giro's stretching quite that far.

I agree, but ultimately by hijacking the 'Tiffany Design' stuff they have also hijacked the little blue box and the magical wrapping which is half of the Tiffany ring experience.

Nah, won't be going to Tiffany - I have a massively valuable ring from Garrards (from the 30s?) which I shall be resetting into a new ring for her - via a friend who runs Wint and Kidd (named after the 2 camp baddies in Diamonds Are Forever):

I blame eBay. You can pick up any of the tat on there for around £30-50. Complete sets etc.

Used to be quite nice. For my 18th I had the tag necklace and bracelet - 3 years ago it was still quite 'cool' without being chav. Now I hate admitting to it as you always see Chantelle sporting it at the local sleaze bar. I took mine off and never wore them again after someone came up to me in the toilets of a club (fat and chavvy. She was wearing it with a gold St. Christopher *sob* ) and said, ''ere Look! We 'ave the same necklace.' Then proceeded to tell me how it was bought for her by Gary when they were in Cardiff. The shame!

TBH, you do just pay for the name. Within 6 months the tag of my bracelet had worn through and I had to have it repaired

My mother has handed down to me some lovely pieces of antique jewellery which I'd treasure over anything modern.
