This has come up a few times before, but cannot find a thread in past few years to take in the sway towards 4WD being more common.

I'm after for a single vehicle which meets the following criteria:

Fast - 0-60 sub 5s or thereabouts
Estate car - but prefer 'compact' rather than massive. Would tolerate a smallish 'SUV'
4WD - need the traction for towing a ~750kg boat/trailer up a steep slipway. I see too many FWD/RWD cars struggling.
Modern - 2012 or later, <40k miles
Approved for towing 750kg + (some of the 'obvious' choices may not be).
Cost - Under £30k, closer to £20k a bonus
Petrol preferred - will only do 3 or 4k per year with lots of 15 min trips.
Automatic - American wife don't do 'stick'

From my own investigation, struggling to beat 335d xdrive, but diesel would not suit usage profile or my ears. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hmmm ok, v8 ones are too dear. You can't tow with the v10.

Can you fit a tow bar to an RS4?

How about a BMW 330/335i Xdrive Touring?

Petrol, estate, automatic, quicker than Lance Armstrong on the way back from his dealer. Job's a good'un!

Thanks for the replies.

RS4 for my preferred year / mileage is coming up too expensive. I believe they can tow.

I can find some petrol 3 series touring in xdrive spec, but only the 320, which @ 7.7s to 60 is too slow for my liking. Did they make a 330i / 335i 340i in this spec?

Any idea if Volvo Polestars can tow?

200-odd petrol, auto, audi's from 20k to 30k with <40k miles and 0-60 in <5s on autotrader.

You'd just need to work out which ones you can tow with.

RS3?

Now I have 'gocaravanning.com' in my browser history.
Seems the RS3 cannot tow. Also a bit too small for other domestic duties.
Lots of S5's, but I'd miss the practicality of an estate car / kid wagon.
Looks like the Golf R cannot tow... estate may have ticked the boxes.

Guess I may have to wait for the depreciation gods to work their magic on some fast audi avants.
Or 335d x drives + ear plugs.

Thanks for the input.

What about one of these?

Most are diesels, but you can find the odd petrol one kicking about.

Maybe not as quick as you'd like, but considerable value for money:

Choice in the used market isn't as wide as with the Audis, mind you.

A few clicks and I was back to the V60 T6 Polestar. Reading through the manual, it might be able to tow, but not 100% clear. Can't find this model listed on my favorite caravan websites.

A lightly used 2015 model is around the £30k mark today, so may well be towards the £20k target this time next year.

Top end Subaru Legacy wagon perhaps? Quite discreet to look at, very tuneable, 3.0 flat 6 lump. AWD. Comes in 'Outback' version if you require a bit more ground clearance.

Sounds to me like you would be much better of with at least 2 cars unless this is the problem you are trying to get away from.

There is the Jeep SRT8 - LINK - or if you relax the age to 2011 you might be able to pick up an X5M/RRS/Cayenne etc. but they might be a bit on the large side.

A pre-facelift RS Q3 is a bit smaller but with a 5 pot soundtrack and is probably only a remap away from sub-5 seconds. A quick look online makes me think all were shipped with preparation in place for a tow bar but not necessarily fitted so one may need retrofitting.

What is wrong with S4 avant. 3.0 V6 with c5.1s to 60 and a remap away from a whole lot faster...

Apologies if I missed something in your spec that precludes this option.

Polestars definitely cannot tow - they have not been approved and no towbar is available. I looked into this as it would have been a nice to have when I ran one for a year. I ended up borrowing the Father in laws Landy instead.

There's not a lot out there - does the skoda superb estate 4x4 meet your needs (5.8 sec in the 2.0 TSI petrol) - though may be too big?
