The Hanging debate

I noticed in the press recently that an Iranian serial killer Mohammad Bijeh was publicly flogged 100 times and hung.

Bijeh had committed terrible crimes killing several boys possibly 16 maybe more as some were Afghan refugees and were hard to trace. Bijeh had lured them into the dessert to look for wild animals and proceed to rape and murder burying his victims in a shallow grave. Evidently he confessed to his crimes and his accomplice was sentenced to 15 years.

Hanging in Iran is not the conventional drop method used in Britain prior to the abolition of the death penalty but by the use of a crane where the prisoner is swung up into the air and throttled.

An apology if this seems unnecessarily gruesome it is not intended to be so. Does this Iranian example demonstrate a need for the most terrible of crimes to be treated in the most severe manner?

Should the death penalty be reintroduced to Great Britain or are we content that the current laws allow for justice to be done?

My view is that the death penalty is very hypocritical and that it is too good for such criminals. We should introduce stricter sentences that make the criminal's life a true misery. If this includes flogging then so be it.

I'm sick and tired of the courts etc being on the side of the criminal.

I don't think so, take murder for example, the murderer might think within himself that he was wholly justified by committing the act. Then the justice system hangs him or her thinking they're wholly justified.

So, which one is right? they have done exactly the same thing.

I think the death penalty has a place in our criminal justice system.

However it should be reserved for the most heinous of crimes and only on those cases that meet a higher standard of proof.

No - only because it is impossible to determine 100% if a person is truely guilty or innocent. If you kill them and they are found to be innocent, how can you go back on it? At least if they are merely incarcerated they can be let out again at the very least.

We do need harsher punishments in this country IMO. I am also peed off with hearing again and again of people literally getting away with murder

I used to be all for the likes of Huntley etc being strung up.
However, firstly, the number of cases where "solid" convictions have been overturned at appeal have changed my views ENTIRELY.
And secondly, and call me a follower of conspirancy theories if you want, but with the way our laws have been bastardised recently, it would be all to easy to shut someone up for good.

Yes the death penalty should be introduced for the most serious crimes like:

Being a sandalist

reading the Guardian

Being a Liberal democrat

Opperating revenue cameras

Being David Begg

cycling

believing in global warming

working for the BBC

Come now None Green these were all sensible proposals until you espoused the death penalty for cyclists-what harm do they do?

I dont really see how it is any sort of detterent. Guy in Iran would have known that it was a hanging offence and did it 16+ times. Yeah - put him right off, didn't it.

On the other hand I dont want to be sharing good oxygen with serious paedophiles.


BTW has anyone read any diaries of guys in the USA on death row?

Knowing that they are going to be topped and the stress of all those appeals is tantamount to torture. Which is pretty good punishment if you like that sort of thing.
