£15k budget, decent motorway muncher

Gone from doing 2k a year to 20k a year in miles.

Currently have a mk6 gti, and am looking to change.


Ideally looking for a diesel between 2-3litre, so it has some power and needs to have some road presence.

ideas? recommendations?

Road presence for one may be vulgar for another so only you can decide on what constitutes your idea of that.

However, for 20,000 miles I'd go auto, decent seats and ride quality, decent stereo and zenons/ led lights (20,000 miles will inevitably involve driving in poor weather and darkness).

I've got a Volvo V60 D5 which is perfect for 20,000 miles a year. It probably doesn't have the road presence you desire though. Don't underestimate the importance of comfortable seats..

There are of course lots of other options out there and I'm sure others will be along shortly to recommended them.

BMW 5GT. This is a fantastic car for covering big miles. Good engine, fairly efficient. The interior is a lovely place to be and the seats are really comfortable.

Yeah..... but look at it.... it is in competition for being one of the ugliest BMWs ever.

The looks are a bit subjective i agree. But the pics don't do it any justice & they look much better in the flesh TBH - It's really grown on me & I actually quite like them, but they can look horrible in sliver or white etc... Much better in darker colours.
They are much bigger than a 5 and essentially a 7 series inside 9Based on a 7 series chassis i believe). Basic spec level is very high and the interior is a lovely place to spend some time. I looked at X5's and X6's but TBH the interiors felt like a downgrade to one of these.

55MPG+ making progress, i have a colleague getting a genuine 60 MPG+ on a long run stifled by speed enforcement (South Wales to Bedfordshire).

Won't have the quality or woosh of the luxo barges recommended, but that's the trade off.

Or a nice compromise is an Alpina D3 biturbo good power it has presence a nice ride with good handling as well as good economy, they hold there value well but they are Manual only.
